Athlon Sports introduced its rankings of the top first-year college football coaches of 2010 earlier this week, and Western Kentucky coach Willie Taggart ranked high on the list.
Taggart was ranked by Athlon ??a national sports publication and website ??as the fourth-best first-year coach from a season ago.
Despite the fact that the Hilltoppers finished just 2-10, Athlon writer Mitch Light said the group?s overall improvement was the reason for Taggart?s high ranking. Light wrote, ?The Hilltoppers were far more competitive under Taggart?s watch. They were outscored by an average of 19.2 points per game en route to an 0-12 record in ?09; the scoring differential dropped to 10.3 points per game last fall.?
Louisville?s Charlie Strong was No. 1 on the list, followed by Florida State?s Jimbo Fisher and Notre Dame?s Brian Kelly, respectively.
Kentucky?s Joker Phillips came in at No. 11, while Louisiana-Monroe?s Todd Berry ranked at No. 10.
