? Monday, October 4th:: School starts back for all those attending Ashwick High School, home of the Ashwick Panthers. This is also the first day at the school for the three witches. Many things are happening. Sports sign-ups, signing up for certain clubs, ect.

? Friday, October 8th:: The annual "Back To School" dance, held in the school's gymnasium. It's nothing big like the Halloween Masquerade, and never requires much decorating. However, those in Student Council are in charge of making and handing out fliers, and getting people together to do a little decorating. [A boys ask girls event, though you can go alone as long as you're a Junior or Senior.]

? Monday, October 18th:: The town of Ashwick's Fall(Autumn) festival. Carnival rides, games, and activities for the local "townsfolk." The school's drama club usually puts on some small play. The football team usually runs a few booths at the festival as well: Playing games to win a prize, bobbing for apples, kissing booth, something along those lines. And don't forget the great 'Haunted House!!' =)

? Friday, October 22nd:: The Ashwick Panther's first football game, it is also Homecoming. Their first game, like always during Homecoming, is against their biggest rival. The Blackwood Bears. During this time AHS(Ashwick High School) students are full of school spirit! They deck out in the school's colors(red and gold), and come supporting their Panthers at the game!! Students in the school's daily paper go to take pictures of the game, and get "interviews" from a couple of the star players.

? Sunday, October 31st:: The great, cherished Halloween Masquerade. Ashwick students adore this event that has been a tradition every Halloween for over thirty years. Students on Student Council start decorating a week in advance. It is also held in the large school gymnasium. It is, like always, a boys ask girls event. You cannot get in the doors without a mask on!!!

That is all the events we have so far! Please suggest other things to fill in the gaps. Obviously, there needs to be a couple! =P Once the month of October is over events for the following month will be put up!

Romeo, a fluffy maltese mix, was found laying by the side of a fellow dog, Juliet, after she was hit by a car. Juliet died on the way to the hospital, but Romeo survived, and was left in need of a loving home.

This story is told in "The Unadoptables," a series from FremantleMedia's new YouTube channel, The Pet Collective. The channel consists of seven original, short-form animal series, produced by the company behind "American Idol."

In the video above featuring Romeo, Baldwin Park Animal Care Center caregiver Isha Willits explained, "He lost his Juliet, so we called him Romeo."

Although their facility is large, Willits explained in the video that sick, suffering and aggressive dogs are often euthanized because "we don't have all the space in the world; we don't have all the resources to walk these dogs every day and keep them happy, and they don't deserve to be in a cage forever."

As a public shelter, LA Departament of Animal Care and Control's Evelina Villa explained to HuffPost, "We don't have the luxury of saying, 'no, we're full'" and the numbers add up. They're currently in the midst of "kitten season," receiving litters of kittens nearly every day.

Villa estimates that over 23,340 animals on average enter the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center every year, including dogs, cats, rabbits and other domestic animals.

The shelter takes in strays, gather animals roaming the streets, and accepts pets surrendered by people who can no longer care for them, including families who can't afford the pet, are having a baby or are moving.

Isha Willits told HuffPost that one problem is that pet owners don't educate themselves about the animal before taking it in, and an active pet may not fit the owner's lifestyle.

State Rep. Marcie Maxwell (D-Renton) received the Washington Education Association?s highest honor last Saturday at the organization?s 2012 Representative Assembly in Spokane.

The proclamation that accompanied Maxwell?s Friend of Education award acknowledged her work as a prominent figure in addressing critical issues facing public education and for her work aimed at ensuring a better life for public school students in Washington state.

The association cited Maxwell, a former Renton school board director, as a tireless advocate for improving the public education system in Washington.

Rep. Maxwell represents the 41st Legislative District communities of Bellevue, Beaux Arts, Issaquah, Mercer Island, Newcastle, Renton, and Sammamish. She serves in a legislative leadership role as the Deputy Majority Leader for Education and Opportunity, and co-chairs the Quality Education Council. In 2011, she earned the Washington State PTA's highest honor, the Friend of Children award.

Obama taps Yucca Mtn critic to lead nuclear agency

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Moving quickly to stem a controversy, President Barack Obama on Thursday nominated an expert on nuclear waste to lead the federal agency that regulates the nation's nuclear power plants.

Allison Macfarlane, who served on a presidential commission that studied new strategies to manage nuclear waste, would replace Gregory Jaczko as head of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Jaczko announced his resignation Monday after a tumultuous three-year tenure in which he pushed for sweeping safety reforms but came under fire for an unyielding management style that fellow commissioners and agency employees described as bullying.

A White House spokesman said Obama believes Macfarlane is the right person to lead the commission, calling her a highly regarded expert who has spent years analyzing nuclear issues.

Macfarlane "understands the role that nuclear power must play in our nation's energy future while ensuring that we are always taking steps to produce this important energy source safely and securely," White House spokesman Clark Stevens said.

Stevens called the NRC crucial to protecting public health and safety and said Obama hopes the Senate considers her nomination quickly.

Macfarlane, an associate professor at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., wrote a book in 2006 that raised technical questions about a proposed nuclear waste dump at Nevada's Yucca Mountain.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., who is the leading congressional opponent of the Yucca site, praised Macfarlane as someone who will make nuclear safety a top priority. Macfarlane's education and experience, especially her service on the blue ribbon commission on nuclear waste, make her qualified to lead the NRC "for the foreseeable future," Reid said in a statement.

Reid said he continues to have concerns about Republican Kristine Svinicki, who has been nominated by Obama for a new term on the commission, but added that he believes Svinicki and Macfarlane should be considered together, continuing a recent Senate tradition of considering NRC nominees from opposing parties at the same time.

Svinicki, a nuclear engineer and former Senate GOP aide, was among four NRC commissioners who publicly criticized Jaczko's management style last year. The commissioners ? two Democrats and two Republicans ? sent a letter to the White House last fall expressing "grave concern" about Jaczko' s actions, which they said were abusive and "causing serious damage" to the commission.

No disciplinary action was taken against Jaczko, who has strongly denied the allegations.

Jaczko, a Democrat, announced his resignation ahead of a potentially blistering report due out soon from the agency's inspector general, which has been investigating Jaczko's actions for more than a year.

A former Reid aide, Jaczko led a strong response to the nuclear disaster in Japan and was a favorite of industry watchdogs, who called his emphasis on safety a refreshing change from previous agency chiefs who were close to the nuclear industry or who came from it.

But scientists, fellow commissioners and many rank-and-file staffers said Jaczko had created a chilled working environment at the NRC, which oversees safety at the nation's 104 commercial nuclear reactors.

The Nuclear Energy Institute, an industry group, called Macfarlane "an active contributor to policy debates in the nuclear energy field for many years" and urged the Senate to confirm her nomination as soon as possible.

"It would not serve the public interest to have her nomination linger," the group said. "We urge the Senate to confirm both Commissioner Svinicki and Professor Macfarlane expeditiously."

Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., chairwoman of the Senate Environment Committee, said Macfarlane's background and experience demonstrate a strong commitment to safety ? a commitment she called especially important in the wake of the nuclear disaster at Japan's Fukushima Dai-ichi plant.

Boxer said she will schedule a joint hearing on the two NRC nominees in June.

Per Peterson, a professor of nuclear engineering at the University of California, served with Macfarlane on the nuclear waste commission, which was appointed by the Obama administration to make recommendations on how the nation should store and dispose of more than 71,000 tons of radioactive waste at dozens of sites across the country.

"I think she will be effective in leadership" of the NRC, "mainly because she listens," Peterson said of Macfarlane.

In a 2009 interview with Technology Review, Macfarlane acknowledged that most of the objections to the never-completed Yucca Mountain site were political, but added: "The technical objections are serious and real."

The area near Yucca Mountain is seismically and volcanically active, she said, adding that spent nuclear fuel could be stored safely at nuclear plants for decades.

The presidential panel recommended that the government start looking immediately for an alternative to Yucca Mountain. The report also recommended that responsibility for managing nuclear waste be transferred to a new organization, independent of the Energy Department.

Emergency Medical Services Authority spokeswoman Lara O'Leary says seven people were taken to a hospital with gunshot wounds after the melee Monday night. She says a pregnant woman was also taken to the hospital after she was assaulted in the scuffle.

O'Leary says the pregnant woman and six of the gunshot victims are in good condition Tuesday morning. One person is in critical condition.

Police Capt. Dexter Nelson said a scuffle erupted Monday night in a crowd of people walking toward the Bricktown district, a popular nightlife area, and that it quickly turned ugly.

CBO warns of US falling off 'fiscal cliff'

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A new government study released Tuesday says that allowing Bush-era tax cuts to expire and a scheduled round of automatic spending cuts to take effect would probably throw the economy into a recession.

The Congressional Budget Office report says that the economy would shrink by 1.3 percent in the first half of next year if the government is allowed to fall off this so-called "fiscal cliff" on Jan. 1 ? and that the higher tax rates and more than $100 billion in automatic cuts to the Pentagon and domestic agencies are kept in place.

There's common agreement that lawmakers will act either late this year or early next year to head off the dramatic shift in the government's financial situation. But if they were left in place, CBO says it would wring hundreds of billions of dollars from the budget deficit that would "represent an additional drag on the weak economic expansion."

CBO projected that the economy would contract by 1.3 percent in the first half of 2013, which would meet the traditional definition of a recession, which is when the economy shrinks for two consecutive quarters.

"Such a contraction in output in the first half of 2013 would probably be judged to be a recession," CBO said.

At issue is the full expiration of two rounds of major tax cuts enacted during the Bush administration and automatic spending cuts on the Pentagon and domestic programs that are scheduled to take effect as punishment for the failure of last year's deficit "supercommittee" to produce a deficit-cutting agreement last year.

Last summer's debt and budget agreement imposed almost $1 trillion in cuts to agency budgets over the coming decade and required automatic cuts ? dubbed a sequester in Washington-speak ? of another $1 trillion or so over the coming decade.

The CBO study came as Capitol Hill is hopelessly gridlocked over spending and taxes in advance of the fall elections. The White House and top Democrats like Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada say they will refuse to act on the expiring tax cuts and automatic spending cuts unless Republicans show greater flexibility on raising taxes.

"We're open to a balanced alternative plan for deficit reduction," Reid told reporters. "But if we can't do that, a deal's a deal."

Republicans are pressing to deal with the problem now. But they're not showing any more flexibility on tax increases.

"You can call this a fiscal cliff. You can call it Taxmageddon as others have done," said Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah. "Whatever you call it, it will be a disaster for the middle class. And it will be a disaster for the small businesses that will be the engine of our economic recovery."

The results of the elections will have a lot to do with the ultimate solution, but several top lawmakers predict the current Congress will punt the issue into 2013 for the newly-elected Congress and whoever occupies the White House to deal with.

CBO is the respected nonpartisan agency of Congress that produces economic analysis and estimates of the cost of legislation.
