PerfectMenuWriting about billion dollar valuations and companies flush with cash is certainly fun, entertaining, and hopefully enlightening, but it's always fun to come across a teeny-tiny startup solving a small, but real problem for a clientele you know almost nothing about. No better example than PerfectMenu.com and its dead-simple solution that helps eateries get their menus online and easily maintain them.

Creative Old-Skool Billboards Featuring Iconic Bands | So Bad So ...

Billboards Featuring Musicians Down Sunset Boulevard Los Angeles by Robert Landau

Ah the golden (and now bygone) era of the rockstar, everything in excess, record labels made millions and everything was larger than life, especially when it came to Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. That?s when photographer?Robert Landau?started seeing billboards promoting some of the biggest acts in the history of popular music. Big brands, brought in big dollars and thus a giant promotional blitz for their new records was always part and parcel of every marketing strategy. Seeing these huge bands on even bigger billboards essentially elevated their status from merely being popular musicians, to becoming an iconic part of popular culture.

This pheonmenon of larger than life billboards promoting the biggest stars of the day started around 1969 ? that?s when?Landau?first saw The Beatles peering down at him from up on high. Over the next 10 years as the music industry surged, countless artists were featured along the strip and all of them were gleefully captured by an exctiable??Landau.

It was also a statement to the world that the record label was behind you 110% and as you can imagine, the premium spots on the Boulevard were worth serious money. And if you were going to spend such a large amount, you needed to get people?s attention and make a genuine impact ? to the point that they would take their eye off the road to look up. That notion almost single-handedly sparked a ferocious surge in the type of creative used in the billboards, as each record label was determined to have the most outrageous and eye-catching designs. That goes a long way into explaining why for example a dog, sheep & even pig were used to build anticipation of?Pink Floyd?s 1977 album?Animals.

Billboards Featuring Musicians Down Sunset Boulevard Los Angeles by Robert Landau

He probably didn?t know it at the time, but through his photography he?s capture one of the finest moments of the music industry ? where creativity was allowed to roam free and where music was truly supported.

?Not many people outside Sunset and the music industry were seeing these. What they were really trying to do was create buzz within the industry.?

Thankfully he?s placed all his incredible images in his new book titled ?Rock ?n? Roll Billboards of the Sunset Strip?, a modern day archive of excess through the power of advertising at it were. Over 100 photos are featured (we?ve featured a few below to give you a taste) and it?s only $50 so do yourself a favour and head over to Angel City Press?&?get yourself a copy of musical history. It?s well worth it.

Veterans sue railroad over fatal crash in Texas

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) ? Two Army veterans and their wives on Wednesday sued the railroad company whose train hit a truck carrying veterans and their spouses during a parade in Texas.

Four veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan were killed and 16 more people were injured in the Nov. 15 collision. They had been riding on a flatbed truck in the parade organized to honor wounded veterans for their military service and were in the process of crossing the tracks when the crash happened. Officials have said the truck entered the crossing after the warning signals began sounding.

The lawsuit was filed by Richard Sanchez and Todd King and their wives, but one of their attorneys said he expects other veterans to join it. He said the lawsuit was filed with just two couples because steps needed to be taken quickly to preserve evidence.

The lawsuit claims negligence and recklessness on the part of Union Pacific Railroad Inc. and Smith Industries Inc., the company that owned the truck, led to the collision. It was filed in Midland, where the crash happened.

The veterans have not asked for a specific amount in damages because their "No. 1 desire is that no accident like this ever happens again," said Bob Pottroff, one of the attorneys representing the two couples.

The lawsuit claims the railroad was negligent in 28 ways, including failing to provide reasonable and timely audible and visual warning of the approaching train and failure to provide a safe railroad crossing. It also says the train did not brake or otherwise attempt to slow and the railroad hadn't fixed what it claims are hazardous conditions posed by the road grade.

Union Pacific spokeswoman Raquel Espinoza-Williams said the company would not comment on the lawsuit specifically, but she noted in an email that federal investigators have already determined the truck moved onto the tracks after the red flashing lights and bells activated.

"Disregarding active warning signals is extremely dangerous, and we urge drivers to stop once the red flashing lights and bells activate," she wrote.

The lawsuit accuses Smith Industries of having a driver who, among other things, failed to keep a proper lookout and didn't exercise reasonable care for the veterans on the truck's trailer.

The attorney representing Smith Industries, Jimmie B. Todd of Odessa, was away on vacation and could not be reached for comment.

The driver of the truck, 50-year-old Dale Andrew Hayden of Midland, is an Army veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan and is employed by Smith Industries.

Also Wednesday, the Texas Department of Transportation released documents showing the crossing's warning system was designed to become operational at least 30 seconds before the arrival of trains. On the day of the crash, only 20 seconds elapsed from the time the system was activated to the train's arrival, according to the NTSB.

Twenty seconds meets federal guidelines, but railroads can ? and do ? provide longer intervals at some crossings.

The documents, released to The Associated Press and other media organizations in response to requests under the Texas Public Information Act, do not show whether the crossing had been upgraded or altered since it was completed in 1991.

A TxDOT official said in an email released with the documents that the crossing was designed for trains that went up to 25 mph, but they now travel on that line at up to 70 mph. Darin Kosmak, section director for the department's rail-highway division, wrote in the email to TxDOT's legal counsel that the state expected the railroad to upgrade its safety mechanism to match the greater speeds, but had not verified that changes were made.

Espinoza-Williams said in an email that the design documents released by the state "do not reflect current conditions at the ... crossing, which clearly has more than six trains per day operating at a maximum speed of more than 25 mph."

Create A Profitable Online Store Course: An Interview With The ...

online store

Have you ever wondered how people and businesses go about selling their products on the internet and if it?s difficult create an online store? Steve Chou used to wonder the exact same things before he became a father five years ago. He wanted to find a way for his wife to quit her job to become a stay at home mom without losing one entire income stream. Through a lot of research, trial and error, and ultimately success, they started their own profitable online store and impressively made over $100,000 in the first year! After achieving success and getting numerous questions from people seeking advice on how to do the same, Steve founded the Create A Profitable Online Store Course.

He?s spent a lot of hours building out the course and has been featured in many media outlets including The New York Times and MSNBC. I?ve known Steve for years and recently met up with him in Denver. Curious to learn more about his business he shared with me his thoughts in the following interview.

What?s the number one hurdle people face when trying to start their own online store or business? What are some other obstacles people face?

Steve:The #1 hurdle that most people face is finding the right niche to pursue.?There is a delicate balance of demand vs competition that must be taken into consideration when deciding what to pursue.?If either your niche is too competitive or if there isn?t enough demand, you won?t be successful. The other big obstacle that most shopowners face is getting people in the door and traffic to their website.

How do you build a reputation of trust around your online store so that people are willing to input their credit card or Paypal information and make a purchase?

Steve: There are many ways to build trust.? First off, it?s important to add trust logos near forms fields where people are entering in sensitive information.?Also, adding real customer testimonials around key decision points is essential as well.?But overall, if you have a good looking website, that usually speaks volumes about your store credibility.

Tell us about how you decided to price your online store product at $499? Talk about the value you believe it provides. Is there a money back guarantee?

Steve: There is no other course out there that provides the level of personal support that my course provides. Every week, I hold office hours where I answer questions live.?In addition, I?m constantly adding new content to the course so the material will never go stale.?We are currently at over 100 videos and over 40 hours of video content that pretty much covers everything you need to know.?And you receive a lifetime membership to the site as part of your course fees.

Who is your typical buyer of your product? What is their demographics (gender, age, employment status, current income levels, etc)? What do you think their motivations are for buying your product?

Steve: Basically, my course appeals to anyone who wants to take control over their life and become their own boss. Due to the demographics of my blog, I attract a lot of couples who want to start a family and stay at home with their kids. But overall, anyone who has the desire to start their own business should consider signing up.

You currently make over $100,000 from your online store and are on track for a new record year. Is the figure in revenues, operating profits, or net profits?

Steve: We made 100K in profit during our first year of business and it continues to grow in the double and triple digits every year.

Is there a profitability point in time where you will be willing to quit your day job in order to spend more time with your family and do whatever else you enjoy doing? Is there some type of personal savings goal you have in mind that covers X amount of years of living expenses perhaps?

Steve: For me, quitting my job is not about the money at this point.? Between my businesses, I already make more money than I need.?The key for me is keeping my mind stimulated so I don?t get bored.?Right now, I design microprocessors at my day job and it forces me to use my brain.

If your store?s profitability is irrelevant for quitting your job, then what holds you back from quitting your day job? You mentioned you like your job and find it to be quiet cushy, however, surely there are other things you?d rather do?

Steve: Currently, I?m trying to figure that out. I?m not the type of person that can play tennis or golf every day or travel 9 months out of the year.?I need constant mental stimulation.?If I ever quit my day job, I?d probably start another business.

If you are a normal person who can generate over $100,000 in revenue over a few short years, why don?t others do the same with the advancement and ubiquity of the internet?

Steve: I believe that everyone can do it.?However, there are very few people that have the necessary persistence. That is why it is so important to find a mentor who can provide you with guidance so you avoid making silly mistakes.

Tell us about a time, or times when the online business didn?t go so well. What did you do to carry on? Did you ever want to shut the business down or neglect it for a while?

Steve: Our online store had the luxury of being profitable since day one.?The beauty of the internet is that it doesn?t cost much money to start and maintain a website.?Therefore, we never ever considered shutting the business down. While there were many slow periods in the beginning, once we got into a groove the business kind of snowballed.

A Techy Tuxedo That Keeps You Looking Good and Dry When You Pop Champagne

Though it's growing incredibly rare to find occasions to wear tuxedos, it's also growing incredibly common to pop bottle of champagnes when one wears a tuxedo. But though champagne and tuxedos get along swimmingly, champagne on tuxedo is not as nice a combo. That's why Proof NY decided to make a techy tuxedo that can repel water and dirt and champagne. International Ink: Gift Ideas for Comics Nerds (Part 2 of 2) - Arts Desk

In which we take a look at a great big pile of review copies of comic books, cartoons, and graphic novels. This is Part 2 of a two-part series. Read Part 1 here.

Anyone mourning the gradual shrinking and axing of comic strips in newspapers should consider the comic-strip reprint collection. One of this year's most impressive is?BBXX by Rick Kirkman and Jerry Scott (AndrewsMcMeel, $25), a large hardcover compendium of 20 years' worth of?Baby Blues?complete with comments from both creators. I'm amazed that the strip has been going for two decades, and that its main characters, Wanda and Darryl, went from one to three kids in that period of time.

Modesty Blaise is one of my favorite adventure strips, and?Death in Slow Motion by Peter O'Donnell and Neville Colvin (Titan, $20) is another worthwhile volume in this excellent reprint project. These stories originally appeared between 1983 and 1984, and Colvin's art is less accomplished, especially in the faces, than that of main Blaise artist Romero.?For those who prefer his artwork,?Modesty Blaise: Lady in the Dark just came out, and boasts the added attraction of Modesty debunking the claims of a naked female time traveler.

Titan is also reprinting American comic strips in hardcover:?Hagar the Horrible: The Epic Chronicles 1977-1978 by Dik Browne is the fourth book in the series, and Beetle Baily: The Daily & Sunday Strips 1966 by Mort Walker is the second (both from Titan, $20) and both are worthy collections that document the strips' strongest years. Noted cartoonists Cathy Guisewite and Stan Lee write the introductions to the respective volumes.

Jim Toomey (originally from Alexandria, Va.) is a big ocean environmentalist, and recently featured National Geographic explorer Sylvia Earle in his comic strip. Think Like a Shark (Andrews McMeel, $13) is his 17th Sherman's Lagoon collection.

Surprise comic strip superstar and former lawyer Stephan Pastis visited Politics & Prose this fall to promote Pearls Freaks the #*%# Out: A (Freaky) Pearls Before Swine Treasury (Andrews McMeel, $17) and fans lined up for four-and-a-half hours at his signing. 'Nuff said, as Stan Lee would say.
Captain Marvel (now known as Shazam for trademark reasons) was never in the comic strips, but Chip Kidd and Geoff Spear's Shazam: The Golden Age of the World's Mightiest Mortal (Abrams ComicArts, $35) is a typically lovely Chip Kidd book. Allow me to quote the back cover: "An unprecedented assortment of Shazam collectibles is gathered together for the first time in one volume." If you like superhero ephemera, this is a book for you. I love it?and now I really want a Hoppy the Flying Marvel Bunny paper-airplane kit.

Tony Auth wasn't in the comic strips either?he spent 40 years as an editorial cartoonist for the?Philadelphia Inquirer. The Art of Tony Auth, written with David Leopold (Camino Books, $20) spans Auth's career, organized by topic. Naturally some sections are dated now, especially the ones on presidents, but the cartoons remain enjoyable, and it's interesting to review the evolution of Auth's art. Bonus: Captain Marvel appears in a 1976 health-care cartoon. And the 1979 cartoon on the facing page shows Uncle Sam in traction, being raised higher by a doctor labeled "hospital costs." Clearly, some parts are still (sadly) timely.

Matthew Inman's The Oatmeal is a popular web comic, and How To Tell If Your Cat Is Plotting To Kill You (Andrews McMeel, $15) reprints some of that mixed with new material. This book isn't for everyone. "The Bobcats" comic about two office cats that actually work in an office is a weird combination of Dilbert and Garfield. "How to Tell If Your Cat is a Raging Homosexual" would probably amuse a teenager, but horrify a parent. Though, I grinned several times while reading this?which doesn't happen often.

For more dated humor, try?Siegel and Shuster's Funnyman: The First Jewish Superhero from the Creators of Superman by Thomas Andrae and Mel Gordon (Feral House, $25). Demonstrating conclusively that lightning doesn't strike twice, this book reprints some of the truly lackluster Danny Kaye-influenced comic book and strips. For comics historians, it's good that this book was published; the wider world doesn't need to worry about it.

Same goes for?Joe Simon and Jack Kirby's Fighting American (Titan, $20). After Captain America (owned and trademarked by Timely/Atlas/Marvel/Disney), Simon and Kirby tried to create their own all-American yet satirical Cold War hero. Kirby's 1954-1955 art is dynamic, but intentionally ridiculous stories like "Following the Dangerous Trail of Jiseppi the Jungle Boy" and "Super-Khakalovitch... Boy 'Has-Been'!'" weren't as funny as MAD's were, and haven't aged nearly as well. The original comic book lasted seven issues, and returned for one more in 1966. This collection includes a couple of unpublished stories from the never-printed No. 2.

Movies, of course, drive a lot of comic-art book publishing these days. In animation, "The Art of" books have been de rigueur for about a decade. While Genndy Tartakovsky's movie wasn't a smash success, The Art and Making of Hotel Transylvania by Tracey Miller-Zarneke (Titan, $35) concentrates on the monster flick's character designs and digital backgrounds. The Art of Rise of the Guardians by Ramin Zahed (Insight Editions, $40) offers more on the overall look of the movie, which makes sense given creator William Joyce's background in children's books and animation. Both are attractive and reasonably-priced volumes which will appeal to the animation fan who likes to go a bit deeper into filmmaking.

Constructing Green Lantern: From Page to Screen by Ozzy Inguanzo (Universe, $35) has been sitting around for a while, but fills the same niche for superhero movies. Since his secret identity is a fighter-plane test pilot, there's a section on creating believable airplanes before the book shifts to the design of the crazy aliens of the Green Lantern Corps. The movie was based fairly reliably on the comic-book Green Lantern book, so fans of the monthly pamphlets may still enjoy this one.

This year's final installment in the Batman trilogy produced a glut of books: The massive The Batman Files by Matthew K. Manning (Andrews McMeel, $100) purports to be "the personal journal of Bruce Wayne" and contains "private photos and journal entries [that] provide a glimpse into the inner life of Bruce Wayne, as hundreds of illustrations and sketches penned by the Caped Crusader illustrate the metamorphosis from impassioned visionary to streamlined crime fighter." Notwithstanding the extreme irresponsibility of Manning publishing Batman's secrets, this should appeal to the hardcore Batfan.

Batman's longtime enemy gets the same treatment in The Joker: A Visual History of the Crown Prince of Crime by Daniel Wallace (Universe, $50). Wallace covers the history of all aspects of the Joker?comic book, animation, and movies?with illustrations taking up 99 percent of the book's pages. The progressive darkening of the character is both clear and disturbing here. Batman Unauthorized: Vigilantes, Jokers, and Heroes in Gotham City (BenBella, $18), edited by the great former Batman writer Dennis O'Neil, was released a few years ago, but reemerged for the movie's release. BenBella specializes in ?"light academia" about pop-culture characters, and this book includes essays on the monetary cost of being Batman, and why the character wouldn't work at all in real life.

Triumph of the Walking Dead edited by James Lowder (BenBella, $15) is similar, except with zombies, and includes articles such as "Four-Color Zombies: The Walking Dead in Comics History" by Baltimore's Arnold Blumberg. I'm fond of books like this and wish they had been around when I was in my late teens and looking for something slightly weightier to read about my favorite heroes. I loved the rare novels about comic-book superheroes that came out in the 1970s. Batman stars in Wayne of Gotham by Tracy Hickman (It Books, $27 hardcover, $16 paperback), which appears to have been written based on a few clues about the then-forthcoming movie including an aging Batman who splits with Alfred. The book suffers from several plot holes?like people having access to places in Wayne Manor based on events from before Batman's creation (when he presumably upped the security). The main driving plot (stop reading now if you're buying this) is worse: Hickman would have you believe that Batman's father secretly funded a German refugee's eugenics experiments in the 1950s, just a decade after the Nazis made such research odious. Two other novels now rereleased in trade paperbacks from the same publisher, but which I haven't read yet, are The Last Days of Krypton and Enemies & Allies, both by Kevin J. Anderson (It Books, $16).

Speaking of novels?and to wrap up this long, two-part column?cartoonist?Becky Cloonan takes her pen to Bram Stoker's?Dracula (HarperCollins, $18). I'm a fan of Cloonan's work. For this edition of the 1897 novel, she did 50 full-color illustrations. She used a flat, light palette and simplified artwork, which reminds me of a style prevalent in young-adult books of the 1960s. Unfortunately I don't think the artwork adds enough to the book to make this an edition you have to buy?unless you're a Cloonan fan, too, in which case go ahead and buy yourself a present.

Must See HDTV November 26th December 2nd

It's that time friends, the weekend when we say goodbye to the college football regular season. While there's plenty of NBA, college basketball, college hockey, and NHL action to tide us over, it just won't be the same until the bowls get into full swing. TNT is bringing back a couple of shows from fall hiatus, and we've got a few Blu-ray 3D titles hitting shelves. Look below for the highlights this week, followed after the break by our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and videogames.

The Walking Dead
After an often lackluster second season (until the finale), AMC's hit show has been firing on all cylinders since then and we're actually disappointed that we're wrapping up the first half of season three so soon. Between goings-on at the jail and in town, there's sure to be plenty of action, people choosing sides and, oh yeah, zombies.
(AMC, December 2nd, 9PM)

College Football
This weekend the college football regular season comes to a close, with several conference championships and a couple of other rivalry games that will play into bowl selections. We'll find out who will be joining Notre Dame in the Championship Game once the SEC title has been awarded, and where everyone else is going Sunday night. Whether you love the current system or love to hate it, cherish it, since after next year we're going to a playoff and fans will have to be angry about a slightly different set of circumstances.

MLS Cup
While much of the news is about David Beckham's departure from MLS after this weekend, there's still a game to be played. LA takes on Houston Saturday afternoon, so if you prefer your football played mostly with one's feet, you know where to tune in.
(ESPN, December 1st, 4:30PM)

U.S. chefs' solution for invading Frankenfish? Eat 'em

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The northern snakehead is known as "Frankenfish" and "rattlesnakes with fins," and some chefs say one way to stop the predatory, fast-spreading fish is obvious - with a fork.

With a reputation as fearsome as its name, the voracious snakehead fish has intruded throughout much of the Potomac River basin in Virginia and Maryland in the last decade, snapping up anything that gets in front of it.

Putting the torpedo-shaped snakehead on the menu is Washington-area restaurants' way of helping to control the Asian newcomer. Chefs said they have a key weapon on their side - humans' zest for eating up other species to the vanishing point.

"When man turns its attention to an animal, it's very difficult for the animal. He (the snakehead) is dangerous, but chefs are more dangerous," said David Stein, executive chef at Tony & Joe's Seafood Place in Washington.

He praised the snakehead for its dense, meaty, white flesh with a mild taste that is ideal for anything from grilling to sauteing. But given the name, snakehead ceviche might be going too far.

"The guy that orders that gets it for free," Stein said.

The northern snakehead, or Channa argus, has joined a tankful of invasive fish that U.S. authorities are urging people to control by eating them.

Lionfish in the Caribbean, Asian carp in the Mississippi River basin and blue catfish in Virginia rivers are among other newcomers that environmentalists want to see on a dinner plate.

SLAB-LIKE FLESH

But the snakehead stands out among its invasive peers because its slab-like flesh and its minimal shrinkage is seemingly ideal for white-tablecloth restaurants.

Some four restaurants in the Baltimore and Washington area serve it regularly, according to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.

At Tony & Joe's, snakehead appetizers cost $10 to $11, and entrees about $26. Maryland is the only state with a commercial market and the limited supply is keeping prices high.

"They're really amazing. Probably if it was called any other name than snakehead, people would be more willing to give them a try," Stein said, admiring a 7-pound (3-kg) fish that had been killed by bow and arrow.

Snakeheads are hardy, fast-growing, voracious and prolific. They got their start in the Potomac through releases from aquariums and the live fish trade, and have turned up in such places as California and Florida. The name comes from its coarse scales, boa constrictor-like colouring and a reptilian snout with a mouth featuring dog-like teeth.

The fish are air breathers that can last for days out of water. Even when gutted and with their throats cut, they gape for breath, said John Rorapaugh, director of sustainability and sales at ProFish, a Washington wholesaler.

"Once they get to mature size, they are on top of the food chain and are ravenous," he said.

Mice, birds, frogs, other fish, and even AA batteries have turned up inside snakeheads, Rorapaugh said. The fish weigh from about 8 to 15 pounds when mature.

He said he pays about $5 a pound ($12.50 a kg) for snakehead, and has shipped some outside the Washington area, including to New York's upscale Gramercy Tavern.

Josh Newhard, an expert on the snakehead with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, said it was too early to say what the snakehead's long-term impact would be on its invaded environment.

Native species have shown no sign of decrease despite the fish's "remarkable" spread, he said.

"The potential is really high for them to impact other fish species. The fact that people want to remove them from the system is really good," he said.

Euro officials seek way to unlock Greek crisis

(AP) ? Finance ministers from the 17 EU countries that use the euro are trying to hammer out a deal that will prevent the imminent bankruptcy of Greece.

The ministers, meeting Monday in Brussels, have for weeks failed to agree a strategy that will allow them to release some ?44 billion ($56.8 billion) for the cash-strapped country.

The expectation is that Greece will get the money and an extra two years to make the reforms that are a condition of the bailout. But that extension would cost several billion more and that's lain at the heart of disagreements on the way forward.

Several proposals have been aired to plug the financial hole, including reducing the interest rate Greece pays on loans it is getting from euro partners and the International Monetary Fund.

Dating sites pair politicos by their leanings

This Thanksgiving, are you looking for someone to bring home to the family who likes taking long walks on the beach, playing frisbee in the park and?voting on the same side of the ticket as you?

With the American electorate increasingly divided between Republicans and Democrats, three men have decided to play yenta with politics. JD Beebe, Alex Fondrier and Francois Briard are the team behind Political Matchmakers, a company that runs two separate online dating sites: Red State Date and Blue State Date.

The sites match users for compatibility based on their political leanings, "because no one should have to date a liberal," the host says at the end of a tongue-in-cheek video promoting RedStateDate.com.

The slogan is reversed in the BlueStateDate.com video.

In the dating world, "Status quo is to avoid talking politics at all costs," Fondrier said. But for most partners, politics plays a more important role than looks or personality, according to a study out of the University of Nebraska.

Beebe compared Red State and Blue State Date to sites like Geek 2 Geek , a site that brags it's "the best place on the net to meet geeks."

But for some singles, politics are their main passion. "People crowding the rallies, people in public relations, groups of people who work in government, in Washington, D.C., and the state capitals," Foundrier said.

"There's obviously tons of people out there like this," Beebe said. "Let's make something for them."

When users first sign up at one of the sites, they're asked for standard information like gender, looks and marital status.

But what sets these sites apart is what comes next: Users rank where they stand on issues like the Patriot Act, abortion and fiscal policy. Then they're given a score that tells them how liberal or conservative they are and serves as a basis to help find their matches.

There's no "Conservatives Keep Out" sign on the Blue State Date site, but Beebe and Fondrier say they hope eventually to offer the option of matching users to people on the other end of the political spectrum. There are some self-identified conservatives who've chosen to be on the blue side, and vice versa. The founders aren't about to kick them off.

"We're learning along with the users how they want to best use it," Fondrier said.

The sites have seen thousands of users sign up since their launch a couple of weeks before the election.

Does their success mean there's no hope that Dems and the GOP can ever get along?

"When it comes down to the everyday American, I think they're willing to befriend people from the other side of the aisle, no problem," Fondrier said. "But I think in a long term relationship, marriage, raising children, that's a little bit different."

"That decision has already been made long before we came onto the scene."

Egypt's president stands by his decrees

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's President Mohammed Morsi struck an uncompromising stand Monday over his seizure of near absolute powers, refusing in a meeting with top judicial authorities to rescind a package of constitutional amendments that placed his edicts above oversight by the courts.

Morsi's supporters, meanwhile, canceled a massive rally planned for Tuesday to compete with a demonstration by his opponents, citing the need to "defuse tension" at a time when anger over the president's moves is mounting, according to a spokesman for the president's Muslim Brotherhood.

The opposition rally was going ahead as scheduled at Cairo's Tahrir square, birthplace of the uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak's regime nearly two years ago.

The meeting between Morsi and members of the Supreme Judiciary Council was a bid to resolve a four-day crisis that has plunged the country into a new round of turmoil, with clashes between the two sides that have left one protester dead and hundreds wounded.

Morsi, according to a presidential statement, told the judges that while the constitutional declaration he announced Thursday grants him immunity from any oversight, he intended to restrict that to what it described as "sovereignty issues."

The vaguely worded statement did not define those issues, but they were widely interpreted to cover declaration of war, imposition of martial law, breaking diplomatic relations with a foreign nation or dismissing a Cabinet.

The statement did not touch on the protection from oversight Morsi has extended to two bodies dominated by his Brotherhood and other Islamists: The 100-member panel tasked with drafting a new constitution and parliament's mostly toothless lower chamber, or the Shura council.

The Shura Council does not have lawmaking authorities but, in the absence of the more powerful lower chamber, the People's Assembly, it is the only popularly elected body where the Brotherhood and other Islamists have a majority. The People's Assembly was dissolved by a court ruling in June.

The judiciary has pushed back, calling the decrees a power grab and an "assault" on the branch's independence. Judges and prosecutors stayed away from many courts in Cairo and elsewhere on Sunday and Monday.

A spokesman, Yasser Ali, said Morsi told the judges that he acted within his rights as the nation's sole source of legislation, assuring them that the decrees were temporary and did not in any way infringe on the judiciary.

Two prominent rights lawyers ? Gamal Eid and Ahmed Ragheb ? dismissed Ali's remarks.

Eid said they were designed to keep "Morsi above the law," while Ragheb said they amounted to "playing with words."

"This is not what Egyptians are objecting to and protesting about," Ragheb said. "If the president wanted to resolve the crisis, there should be an amendment to his constitutional declaration."

In Washington, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton spoke Monday by telephone with Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohammed Kamel Amr to "register American concerns about Egypt's political situation," according to spokeswoman Victoria Nuland.

Clinton stressed that the U.S. wanted to "see the constitutional process move forward in a way that does not overly concentrate power in one set of hands, that ensures that rule of law, checks and balances, protection of the rights of all groups in Egypt are upheld," Nuland said.

Morsi's aides have repeatedly emphasized that the president has no intention of amending his decrees, meaning the near absolute powers they give him will stand. Morsi also issued a law to "protect the revolution" that rights activists maintain is effectively a declaration of emergency laws designed to combat poorly defined threats to the nation or to public order.

Opposition activists have denounced Morsi's decrees as a blatant power grab, and refused to enter a dialogue with the president before the edicts are rescinded.

Morsi says he wants to retain the new powers until the new constitution is adopted in a nationwide referendum and parliamentary elections are held, a time line that stretches to the middle of next year.

Many members of the judiciary were appointed under Mubarak, drawing allegations, even by some of Morsi's critics, that they are trying to perpetuate the regime's corrupt practices. But opponents are angry that the decrees leave Morsi without any check on his power.

Morsi, who became Egypt's first freely elected president in June, was quoted by Ali as telling his prime minister and security chiefs earlier Monday that his decrees were designed to "end the transitional period as soon as possible."

The dispute is the latest crisis to roil the Arab world's most populous nation, which has faced mass protests, a rise in crime and economic woes since the initial euphoria following the popular uprising that ousted Mubarak after nearly 30 years of autocratic rule.

Morsi's decrees were motivated in part by a court ruling in June that dissolved parliament's more powerful lower chamber, the People's Assembly, which was dominated by the Muslim Brotherhood and ultraconservative Islamists.

The verdict meant that legislative authority first fell in the hands of the then-ruling military, but Morsi grabbed it in August after he ordered the retirement of the army's two top generals.

Morsi's decrees saved the constitutional panel and the upper chamber from a fate similar to that of the People's Assembly because several courts looking into the legal basis of their creation were scheduled to issue verdicts to disband them.

Secular and Christian politicians have withdrawn from the 100-seat panel tasked with drafting the charter to protest what they call the hijacking of the process by Morsi's Islamist allies. They fear the Islamists will produce a draft that infringes on the rights of liberals, women and the minority Christians.

The dispute over the decrees has taken a toll on the nation's already ailing economy. Egypt's benchmark stock index dropped more than 9.5 percentage points on Sunday, the first day of trading since Morsi's announcement. It fell again Monday during early trading but recovered to close up 2.6 percentage points.

It has also played out in street protests across the country.

Thousands gathered in Damanhoor for the funeral procession of 15-year-old Islam Abdel-Maksoud, who was killed Sunday when a group of anti-Morsi protesters tried to storm the local offices of the political arm of the Brotherhood, Egypt's most powerful political group.

The Health Ministry said 444 people have been wounded nationwide, including 49 who remain hospitalized, since the clashes erupted on Friday, according to a statement carried by the official news agency MENA.

Morsi's office said that he had ordered the country's top prosecutor to investigate the teenager's death, along with that of another young man shot in Cairo last week during demonstrations to mark the anniversary of deadly protests last year that called for an end to the then-ruling military.

Up to 10,000 people marched through Tahrir Square for the funeral procession of 16-year-old Gaber Salah, who died Sunday of head wounds suffered in clashes with police. Salah was a member of April 6, one of the key rights groups behind the anti-Mubarak uprising, and a founder of a Facebook group called "Against the Muslim Brotherhood."

Here are two ways that unchecked spam can hurt and possibly ruin your sites:

  • Rankings.? Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the main way that most marketers build their sites for quality traffic and great rankings.? But spamming techniques can ruin your good rankings by luring visitors to your site(s) by droves in an unethical manner.

Web Spam Vs. Email Spam

You?re not the target ? but your clients are ? and that can drive them off of your site or blog in droves.

Malicious Ways that Spam Can Ruin Your BusinessThere is a service that you can turn to that will automatically delete comment and blog spam so that you don?t have to worry about it anymore.? The service is called Akismet, and you can access it through plugins such as WordPress or the Akismet API.? All you have to do is register and API key (like a password) which is your own private access to your account.

Then, each time a comment, pingback or trackback?appears on your site, the Akismet service tests it and either Okays it or turns it down.? You don?t have to do a thing ? and, you can be assured that the spam designed to ruin your site and steal sales and customers from you is taken care of.? Click Here to Tweet this Post.

Malicious Ways that Spam Can Ruin Your BusinessI?ve spoken about ?black hat techniques? before, and web spamming is definitely one of the worst.? They?re hoping you?ll disregard them because these spam techniques use flattery, praise and other positive comments to catch you off guard.

There?s no way for you to know if these comments and posts are legitimate.? That?s why it?s a good thing to use a plug in like Akismet to check it out for you.? Just be sure you?re protected from these spammers who are thieves and who can run your business off the Internet.?

Video: Rossen Reports: Bounce house injuries skyrocketing

>>> this morning on "rossen reports" a new report on the bounce houses that kids love. nbc investigative reporter jeff rossen is here with more.

>> reporter: good morning, all our ears are perking up, including me, because i bring my kids to bounce houses all the time, big at birthday parties, carnivals, some families even set them up in the backyard. as a parent you think to yourself what can happen, they are soft and cushiony but this morning alarming numbers about kids getting seriously hurt. it's a wake-up call for all of us. those fun inflatable houses now responsible for a spike in injuries. doctors call it an endemic.

>> more than 30 children are treated in the hospital emergency room each day in the country for an injury associated with an inflatable bouncer.

>> reporter: 30 kids a day.

>> 30 kids a day and that equals a child every 45 minutes.

>> reporter: that's dr. gary smith just out with this landmark study in the "journal of pediatrics." for the first time looking at bounce house injuries nationwide over the last two decades.

>> between 2w5ig9 and 2010 , there was a doubling of injuries. the curve looks like this.

>> reporter: it happened to little cassie stapleton.

>> i broke my arm.

>> terrifying.

>> reporter: did you think in a million years my daughter could be hurt in a bouncy house ?

>> never, never.

>> reporter: cassie was coming down the slide when she lost her balance and fell, breaking her arm in two places. we're all guilty of it. turn our back and the kids are playing in there and you think they are safe.

>> absolutely. even the floor is soft so you think that there's nothing that can happen to them but that's not the case.

>> reporter: the most common injury, sprains and fractures, some to the head and neck. 43% caused by falls. most inside the bounce house with some kids bouncing out of it. 16% of injuries caused by other kids, collisions and roughhousing. what should parents do?

>> limit the use to 6 and older because the risk is less for that group.

>> reporter: and make sure kids playing inside are all around the same age.

>> a 7 1/2-year-old shouldn't be in there with 3 year olds.

>> correct.

>> reporter: the frequency of injuries is incredibly low and most happen because of misuse or a failure to follow guidelines. when you go to bouncy houses now what do you do?

>> play.

>> reporter: are you careful in.

>> yes.

>> reporter: casey is all healed now, but her mom will never forget that day she races her to the e.r.

>> you have to keep an eye on them every second if they are in a bounce house . they are not always foolproof, not always safe.

>> reporter: she is cute. look, no one is saying keep your kids away entirely. even cassie 's parents still bring her. you just need to know the risks. there are voluntary safety guidelines for bounce houses, but experts say that may not be enough. manufacturers and doctors need to get together and figure out, they say, a better way to design these houses so the injuries can be even lower. you saw that graph.

>> yeah.

>> doubling over the past couple of years.

>> not only size difference in the kid but how many kids get in there at the same time, becomes like bumper cars.

>> some adults jump in there, too.

>> never a good idea.
