One of the most valuable things a film can do is to take you to a place or introduce you to a character you haven't encountered before.

It's well and good to hear Buck and others tell his story, but the film wouldn't come to much if you didn't feel the connection between his present and past in every frame.

You don't have to be a horse nut to fall for "Buck," one of those rare documentaries whose subject is so inherently fascinating that a fictional character could hardly compete.

Documentaries have a wonderful way of making us care about people and things way outside our own experience, and "Buck" is a prime example.

Brannaman is a fascinating character, but Buck is so tightly focused that only avid horse lovers will find it appealing.

The man's mythology precedes him, and it's the movie's failing that we don't understand how or whether he uses that mythology because he knows it's good business.

...you don't have to completely buy into the language and methods of the horse trainer Buck Brannaman to approve of him.

Watching Brannaman wrestling with his own torments and reaching an understanding with horses is both mesmerizing and inspiring.

Stirring low-key and no-nonsense documentary on renown horse trainer Buck Brannaman.

With an elegant simplicity that befits the man at the center of it all, it's a multi-layered, metaphor-rich film with beautiful, hard-to-ignore lessons.

Idyllic, inspirational, uplifting film

It's a serene quality that has the same calming and inspiring effect on a movie audience: After spending 90 minutes with Buck, I'd probably walk into a horse trailer on his say-so, too.

Both Buck and 'Buck' endorse sensitive care for the voiceless, whether they be horses or cowed children.

It is perhaps a measure of the success of a documentary to be able to interest you in a subject that you'd not normally gravitate toward.

In Buck, director Cidy Meehl captures a man who has dignity, a certain grace, and is self-effacing. Meehl makes a wise choice in keeping Buck from being contrived and just a feel-good experience. She keeps it authentic and human.

It's mesmerizing to watch him do his magic with problem horses, but the film becomes a bit of a one-trick pony after a while.

Brannaman's story is intriguing enough to survive the rather unimaginative construction of the movie that contains it.

Unfortunately, "Buck" follows too closely its hero's example: It is laconic to the point of sleepiness.

"Buck" is an extraordinary and fascinating story about an individual who believes you can accomplish more through simple kindness and understanding.

The movie never takes itself too seriously, maintaining a light tone with a few stabs at humor. The camera work is outstanding with great shots of a variety of horses in the great outdoors.

It's a small story that trades in big emotions, and Meehl makes it worthy of the full-scale approach.

As a manual for handling animals - and people, for that matter - Brannaman's common-sense teachings broaden his story's appeal.

Imax second quarter profit slides as box office disappoints (Reuters)

TORONTO (Reuters) ? Shares of Imax Corp sank 14 percent on Thursday after the big-screen movie company reported an 87 percent drop in second-quarter profit, hurt by a disappointing box office.

But Imax said its global expansion continued apace with strong theater installations. It also said third-quarter box office was off to a strong start, generating $88 million in ticket sales for blockbuster films such as the new "Transformers" and the final installment in the "Harry Potter" series in less than a month.

"While the quarter did not live up to our financial expectations, more fundamental to the long-term value of our business is the fact that we have signed 153 theater deals year-to-date, are installing theaters at a rapid rate and are sitting on a record backlog of close to 300 Imax theater systems," said Imax Chief Executive Richard Gelfond.

The Toronto-based company reported net income of $1.8 million, or 3 cents a share, compared with $13.3 million, or 20 cents a share, a year ago.

On an adjusted basis, it earned 7 cents a share. Analysts had expected adjusted earnings of 20 cents a share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Overall revenue rose 3 percent to $57.2 million, in line with average estimates.

Despite the miss on earnings, an analyst suggested Imax remained a strong long-term investment.

"There is no justification for this kind of decline," said Aravinda Galappatthige from Canaccord Genuity. "The value of the company is driven by future growth and the fact that this was going to be bad quarter was known," he said.

Imax shares were down 14 percent at $20.92 in New York by late morning and at C$19.91 on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The stock had slipped about 14 percent this year prior to the results.

Sony: PlayStation 3 sales down, profit projections fall by 25% (PlayStation 3)

Sony has just posted its latest?financial report, which sees overall profit projections reduced by a painful 25%. The report sees the company's gaming division fall victim to the same losses suffered by the company as a whole. There are plenty of reasons for the drop ? Q1 2011 was a bad time to be based in Japan, and the last five-odd years have been a bad time to be based within the global economy ? but guess what? Despite being the company's only consumer division to bear the full brunt of the earthquake, recession, and April's PSN outage, Sony's Gaming department posted a smaller loss than any other division in its category. Hoorah.

Comparing Q1 2010 to Q1 2011, PlayStation 3 sales have dropped 25%. Gaming as a whole lists an 11.9% drop in revenue over the same period. This makes sense because it has been a real shit year to be a person living on Earth. However, if you look up the term ?Pyrrhic Victory? in the dictionary, do you know what you'll see? No, not a picture of a PlayStation 3, because they don't put pictures in the dictionary, which is a small and somewhat damning sort of triumph for Sony's Gaming division ? which, what do you know, is exactly what a Pyrrhic Victory is.

Because hey, Gaming may have been decimated by the past year's strife and woes and Anonymouses, but the company's TV, Home AV, Digital Imaging and Personal/Mobile Products divisions all posted greater losses. Meaning that the guys that make PlayStation products are actually, at the moment, the heroes of Sony's consumer division for holding (a comparable portion of) the line. Nice work, guys! Sony has told investors it still predicts an overall growth in PS3 sales for the year. The company notes that PSP sales have improved by 30%, raising hopes that upcoming releases such as the PlayStation Vita may improve the fortunes of the company's Gaming division over the next financial year.

China executes 2 former vice mayors for bribery (AP)

BEIJING ? Two former vice mayors in eastern China who were convicted of bribery were executed Tuesday, the country's supreme court said, two of the harshest sentences handed down to high-level Chinese officials in recent years.

The Supreme People's Court said in a statement on its website that Xu Maiyong and Jiang Renjie had been sentenced to death and were executed Tuesday morning.

Corruption is widespread among officials in China, but few cases result in death sentences unless they are linked to murder or other violent crimes.

Xu was convicted in May of bribery, embezzlement and abuse of power during his time as vice mayor of the wealthy resort city of Hangzhou, west of Shanghai.

State-run Xinhua News Agency said Xu took bribes worth more than 145 million yuan ($24 million), embezzled 54 million yuan from a state-owned property firm and illegally diverted 71 million yuan in land purchase payments to a property development company in which he had a stake.

The Ningbo Intermediate People's Court sentenced Xu to death and ordered his personal property confiscated.

The second official, Jiang, was a former vice mayor of Suzhou city in coastal Jiangsu province. Xinhua said he was convicted of taking 108 million yuan in bribes from property developers between 2001 and 2004 when he was in charge of urban planning and real estate development.

Jiang was sentenced to death by the Intermediate People's Court of the city of Nanjing in April 2008.

Jiang helped authorities identify other suspects in the cases, but the court still decided he should be severely punished, Xinhua said.

The news agency said appeals by both men of their original death sentences were rejected by higher courts.

Although the figure is considered a state secret, China is believed to carry out more court-ordered executions each year than all other nations combined.

The season has had its share of setbacks, despite Peters claiming one pole start and three top-10 finishes, including two in the top five, in 10 starts. White is encouraged by the fact the team hasn?t put everything together and are still in striking distance. A strong run in his home state could propel them to the top.

I have no qualms about a woman moving fast with a man, but to find out he was seeing someone else, being introduced to her, and still trying to keep him satisfied even though it was obvious she was just a fling to toss aside was irritating.? I don't like manipulative men.? I like women who put up with them even less.

A man from Joppa was ejected from his motorcycle Saturday, then hit by a car. The wreck happened when a Baltimore man was driving a Honda Accord south. During this time, the motorcyclist was driving a Harley Davidson north. When the Baltimore man tried to make a left turn, he did not yield the right-of-way and the motorcycle crashed into the back of the Honda. He was ejected and landed in the southbound lane of traffic, where he was hit by a pickup truck. According to news reports, he was immediately flown to Maryland Shock Trauma Center. By Monday, he succumbed to his injuries, representing the 11th death on Harford County roads this year.

I?m in the process of deciding whether or not I would like to set up a 401k account with my employer. As we all know, we are in a recession right now and I?m cautious with my money. I?m still in my twenties, but I was still in college as I watched many Americans loose 50% or more of their 401ks money due to the stock market. Right now, I?m not too enticed even though my employer is willing to match some of the money I put into that account. Why have your future ride on something unstable like the stock market. I mean this is my future and social security will definitely not exist for people like me. So the question is, it worth it to invest in a 401k. Also, have Roth IRA account. Thanks. Also, what about the stable value investment? It would yield any return, but at least I won?t loose anything.

US lawmaker wields budget ax over China space ties (AP)

WASHINGTON ? A Republican lawmaker is looking to make the Obama administration pay a price for what he sees as its defiance of Congress in pursuing cooperation with China in science and space technology.

A proposal by Rep. Frank Wolf, a fierce critic of Beijing, would slash by 55 percent the $6.6 million budget of the White House's science policy office. The measure was endorsed by a congressional committee this week, but faces more legislative hurdles, and its prospects are unclear.

President Barack Obama has sought to deepen ties with China, which underwrites a major chunk of the vast U.S. national debt and is emerging a challenge to American military dominance in the Asia-Pacific region. Among the seemingly benign forms of cooperation he has supported is in science and technology. Last year NASA's administrator visited China, and during a high-profile state visit to Washington by China's President Hu Jintao in January, the U.S. and China resolved to "deepen dialogue and exchanges in the field of space."

Wolf, R-Va., argues that cooperation in space would give technological assistance to a country that steals U.S. industrial secrets and launches cyberattacks against the United States.

He says Obama's chief science adviser, John Holdren, violated a clause tucked into budget legislation passed this year that bars the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and NASA from technological cooperation with China. He says Holdren did so by meeting twice with China's science minister in Washington during May.

"I believe the Office of Science and Technology Policy is in violation of the law," Wolf told The Associated Press, adding that cutting its budget is the only response available to him. Wolf chairs a House subcommittee that oversees the office's budget.

The punishment he proposes reflects his deep antipathy toward China, which he accuses of persecuting religious minorities, plundering Tibet and supporting genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan by backing Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir. He described the Obama administration's policy toward the Asian power as a failure and railed against the president for hosting Hu at the White House.

Caught at the sharp end is Holdren's office, whose mandate is to develop sound science and technology policies by the U.S. government and pursue them with the public and private sectors and other nations.

Holdren told a Congressional hearing chaired by Wolf days before his May meetings with Chinese Science Minister Wan Gang that he would abide by the prohibition on such cooperation with China, but then spelled out a rather large loophole: that it did not apply in instances where it affected the president's ability to conduct foreign policy.

At another Congressional hearing shortly afterward, Wolf's annoyance was clear. He threatened to "zero out" Holdren's office.

Space cooperation between the two world powers like the U.S. and the Soviet Union pursued in the Cold War still seems a long way off. NASA Administrator Charles Bolden Jr. visited China in a little-publicized trip in October and discussed "underlying principles of any future interaction between our two nations in the area of human space flight," but no specific proposals.

China sent an astronaut into space in 2003, and plans to send the first building block of a space station into orbit this year, but it still has comparatively limited experience. Another constraint on cooperation is that its manned space program is dominated by its military, whose other capabilities ? most clearly demonstrated by a 2007 test that destroyed an orbiting satellite ? have alarmed American officials.

But one benefit of basic forms of cooperation, such as sharing data and basic design criteria, could be to learn a little more about China's opaque space program. Since 1999, the U.S. effectively banned use of its space technology by China. That also has a commercial downside for American producers in an increasingly globalized marketplace.

"Renewing civil and commercial space cooperation with China ... is not a blank check and need not provide China with sensitive technologies," wrote James Clay Moltz of the Naval Postgraduate School in testimony at a congressional hearing on China's civilian and military space programs in May.

Wolf has included the prohibition on cooperation with China by NASA and the White House science policy office in the bill approved Wednesday by the House Appropriations Committee. The bill budgets $50.2 billion for a raft of federal agencies involved in law enforcement, trade promotion, space and science for the fiscal year starting in October. The 55 percent reduction faced by the science policy's office far exceeds the overall 6 percent cut in spending across all government agencies covered by the bill.

Holdren's office could not be reached for comment Friday. The bill now goes to the Republican-led House of Representatives for approval. A version also must pass the Democrat-led Senate, and the two bills would have to be reconciled before legislation can be sent to Obama to be signed into law.
