How I reduced salt in a favorite dish - Do You Really Know What ...

You'd expect a dish with two small but mighty ocean fish to be salty, but pasta with canned sardines and anchovies really piles in on.

There is sodium in nearly every ingredient, including the imported Colavita whole-wheat pasta I sometimes use.

The first way to cut salt in the recipe is to stop salting the water used for boiling the pasta.

In the past, I'd pump up the flavor by dumping? sardines and anchovies and all their oil into the sauce, but now I drain the cans and add extra-virgin olive oil, which has no sodium.

A 2-ounce can of anchovies has 860 milligrams of sodium or 36% of the recommended daily intake of 2,400 milligrams.?

The anchovies dissolve completely, but give the sauce a hearty, non-fishy flavor.

A 4-ounce-plus can of the Moroccan sardines I use has 603 milligrams of sodium.

But the only way to avoid more sodium in the sauce is to make it yourself.

Today, I looked at the labels of a dozen bottled pasta sauces at the Hackensack ShopRite, and typically saw more than 300, 400 or even 500 milligrams of sodium listed for a serving size of one-half cup.

I found the lowest salt content in Chef Mario Batali's Tomato Basil pasta sauce -- only 180 mg per half cup -- but other Mario Batali sauces have a lot more sodium.

When I serve pasta with sardines and anchovies, I like to add grated Pecorino Romano, a sheep's milk cheese, so that's another source of sodium.

Not using salt in the pasta water and draining the cans of fish are good first steps, but I think I have to go further.

I could cut the amount of sardines -- to two cans from three or four per pound of pasta -- as well as use less bottled sauce and more extra-virgin olive oil.

I could also stop adding anchovies, but the sauce wouldn't be as robust. I can skip the grated cheese.

And I can console myself about the high sodium content of the dish by always drinking a glass or two of red wine with it.

At least that would be good for my heart.

Dolphins' Canuel named coach of the year

Updated: September 27, 2012 10:51 AM

The British Columbia Swim Coaches? Association (BCSCA) held its annual Award?s Banquet last weekend in Vancouver and the Winskill Dolphins Swim Club had plenty to celebrate.

Amongst the Olympic swimmers and coaches being recognized, Winskill Dolphins' very own Amy Canuel received top honours as 12 and under coach of the year for 2012.

Chosen from among 50 teams and 300 coaches, the BCSCA's coach of the year recipient is selected based on swimmer performances in four age-categories: 10 and under, 12 and under, 14 and under, and 17 and under.

Last season,? Canuel?s swimmers won 14 individual gold medals at the Provincial Championships, broke a pair of B.C. age-group records, and represented Canada at the North American Challenge Cup.

?It?s a testament to my swimmers, really," Canuel said following the presentation of the award. "They have many great seasons of swimming ahead of them. And it?s a thrill to receive this award in the company of our BC Olympians.?

Significantly, one third of Canada?s entire Olympic swimming team hails from British Columbia. All three of Canada?s medals from the London Games (two Bronze and one Silver) in swimming came from B.C. athletes.

LA backs deal for downtown NFL stadium

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Los Angeles took a major step Friday toward building a downtown stadium to lure an NFL team back to the nation's second most populous city, despite questions about how a 72,000-seat venue in the city's urban core would impact notorious freeway traffic, nearby housing prices and air quality.

The 12-0 vote by City Council came after starkly contrasting predictions about what the $1.5 billion project would mean for an economically troubled city that has fretted over the loss of professional football since the Raiders and Rams fled Southern California in 1994.

Supporters said the deal with developer Anschutz Entertainment Group would create thousands of jobs, a hub of civic pride and new tax dollars for cash-starved City Hall, while critics warned that affordable housing would vanish in the neighborhood while traffic would come to a virtual standstill on game days.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said in a statement after the vote that it demonstrates "what we can accomplish when the city family joins together with private partners in a transformational development."

"This is truly a game changer for Los Angeles," Villaraigosa said.

The vote was overshadowed by the recent announcement that AEG was seeking a new owner, though company officials have assured City Hall the stadium plan will remain the same, even if the company changes hands.

The biggest question about the stadium is the most obvious: There's no one to play in it. But the Democratic mayor and other supporters hope the agreement will eventually attract a team ? or two ? to one of the nation's most lucrative media markets.

AEG, also the owner of Los Angeles' Staples Center arena and the NHL's Los Angeles Kings, has deep ties to City Hall. Any deal to buy the company, a subsidiary of Denver-based Anschutz Co., would mean a major shift in sports and entertainment in the region and around the world.

AEG's holdings include pro soccer's Los Angeles Galaxy, part-ownership of the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers, and major entertainment and real estate holdings in downtown Los Angeles. Outside the city, AEG owns Major League Soccer's Houston Dynamo and all or part of several arenas around the U.S. and in Sweden, China and Australia.

The project, which calls for the renovation of an adjacent convention center, is facing a lawsuit filed by anti-poverty and environmental activists that some predict could delay or derail plans for the stadium, known as Farmers Field. The activist group, Play Fair at Farmers Field Coalition, is challenging a state law intended to help swiftly resolve legal challenges to the stadium, and it also wants AEG to pay $60 million toward affordable housing in the long-struggling downtown neighborhood.

There are some risky assumptions. In a city where everyone drives, planners predict many fans will leave their vehicles at home and travel to the stadium by bus or rail.

A rival group, Majestic Realty, has proposed building a stadium in the City of Industry, outside Los Angeles.

AEG is hoping to have an NFL team on the field by the 2017 season. The company has pledged about $35 million to reduce traffic problems.

Bo Xilai did 'massive harm' to China's Communist Party, say officials (+video)

Bo Xilai, the disgraced Chinese politician facing prison time in a scandal involving the murder of a British businessman, has been expelled from the Communist Party, which is undergoing a once-in-a-decade generational transition of power.

China's ruling Communist Party accused disgraced politician Bo Xilai of abusing power, taking huge bribes and other crimes on Friday, sealing the fate of a controversial leader whose fall shook a leadership handover due at a congress from Nov. 8.

The once high-flying Bo now faces a criminal investigation that stemmed from a murder scandal, and will almost certainly be jailed. With the Communist Party congress about six weeks away, further steps in the case could come before then, helping pave the way for a transition of power, experts said.

"Bo Xilai's actions created grave repercussions and did massive harm to the reputation of the party and state, producing an extremely malign effect at home and abroad," the official statement from a party leaders' meeting said, according to a report by the official Xinhua news agency.

Bo's wife Gu Kailai and his former police chief Wang Lijun have already been jailed over the scandal stemming from the murder of British businessman Neil Heywood in the southwestern municipality of Chongqing, where Bo was Communist Party chief.

The official statement carried by Xinhua said that in the murder scandal, Bo "abused his powers of office, committed serious errors and bears a major responsibility".

That charge appears to reflect accusations from Wang's trial that suggested Bo tried to stymie the murder investigation.

Reports that Bo, the "princeling" son of a revolutionary leader, could escape with a light punishment have now been dealt a fatal blow, and accusations of womanising could further tarnish his reputation in the eyes of Chinese people.

But the few weeks left before the congress will probably not allow time for a trial, said He Weifang, a law professor at Peking University who has closely followed Bo's downfall.

"I think it's quite certain that he won't be able to escape punishment under the criminal law, but the timing makes it unlikely that will happen before the congress," said He.

"I'd guess that he'll get a jail sentence of 20 years or longer. The death penalty is unlikely, although the bribery charges could in theory allow it, if the amount is as huge as they say."

At the congress, Chinese President Hu Jintao will step down as party chief, almost certainly making way for Vice President Xi Jinping to emerge as top leader. Xi is then almost sure to be appointed state president at the annual parliament session, likely in March next year.

Warning to heed example

Bo, 63, has been expelled from the party as well as the elite decision-making Politburo and Central Committee "in view of his errors and culpability in the Wang Lijun incident and the intentional homicide case involving Bogu Kailai", said the party announcement.

Bogu is his wife's official but rarely used surname.

Bo's "grave violations of party discipline" extended back to his time as an official in Dalian city and Liaoning province in northeast China, and as minister of commerce, said the statement from the Politburo.

Evolving into Your Yoga Practice | Skinny | Skinny Mom | How to get ...

When I started doing yoga about 15 years ago I kept hearing how my practice would evolve and grow and soon I could take the poses to a new level.? That did happen.? I was a diligent student, although a little competitive.? Not just with myself but with everyone around me.? The first time I heard the teacher say ?and if you can, take the bind?, I didn?t have a clue what she meant.? I looked around and noticed twisted arms and legs and I was not one to be left out.? I managed a bind by sheer force and ego, holding my breath the whole time.? If this is what it meant to evolve my practice I was going to do it.? I half expected a little applause for my results but it seemed everyone else was going to their zen place.

For the next several years I became addicted to my practice.? Not only for the spiritual benefits but for the physical as well.? I wanted to make each pose as advanced as possible, because after all, I was a yogi.? I tried to practice keeping my eyes on my mat but couldn?t help but let them wander around the class.? My thoughts were consumed with other people?s practices ? ?He can do a headstand in the middle of the room?, ?She can jump back from crows pose?, ?She?s wearing a cute top?.? Come on, who hasn?t checked out yoga fashion in class?? I always ignored it when my teacher would say ?the smartest yogi in class is the one in child?s pose?.? Has she met me?? I thought those people that went into child?s pose while the rest of us advanced yogi?s were the furthest thing from smart

Then it happened.? An injury that made me feel as if my body was betraying me.? I had to modify certain poses, and on some I just couldn?t do.? This was embarrassing, because I was sure that everyone in the class was looking right at me with sympathy and judgment on my inability to create the perfect pose.? Frustration lead me to ask myself why I was practicing.? The shocking answer I came back with was to be the best. How laughable.? I thought the best thing for my fragile ego was to start from the beginning.? I started going with a friend to her Iyengar class which was very hard for someone like me that needs movement.? I heard on more than one occasion ?settle down, Mina?.? Sigh, how could I?? I was the creator of the Ego-asana.

Thankfully I can say my body is as healed as its going to be and I?m back to my daily practice?WITH MODIFICATIONS.? I believe my lesson is this ? my practice has evolved.? It has evolved to meet my body?s needs and limitations and with that I can go through my flow knowing I am exactly where I need to be.? Which on some occasions is child?s pose?thank you very much.

Detroit's $3.5 Billion Bridge to the Future

With its twin 900-foot towers and silvery steel cables, the $3.5 billion bridge is a striking symbol of Detroit's rebirth. But it is something more than that. Along with a new rail tunnel and an intermodal freight-transfer hub, it's a monument to those who knew that Detroit needed a dramatic stroke. By 2025, new transportation infrastructure has turned the city into a humming trade gateway between the American Midwest and the world. But first it had to overcome some tangled history.

Opened in 1929 to connect Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, the Ambassador Bridge became the busiest international border crossing between the U.S. and its largest trading partner. By 2010, the rickety relic was carrying a quarter of the $500 billion in annual trade between the U.S. and Canada. With truck traffic expected to double by 2035, local politicians and business and labor leaders pushed hard for the new bridge. "Our company sends 600 trucks over the Ambassador Bridge every day," Ford executive chairman Bill Ford says. "What if something happens to the bridge? Of course we need a new bridge!"

Since 1979, the Ambassador Bridge has been the private property of Manuel "Matty" Moroun, who started out working in his father's gas station and became a billionaire by buying up all the shares of the privately financed bridge in the 1970s, then pocketing the profits from tolls, duty-free shops, and gas pumps. Forbes magazine called it "the best monopoly you never heard of." And Moroun fought hard to protect it through well-publicized contributions to politicians and a multimillion-dollar campaign to sway public opinion.

It was long-simmering resentment toward Moroun, in part, that ignited the charge to greenlight the new bridge project. Canada agreed to contribute $2.3 billion. It has not cost Michigan taxpayers a dime.

Long before the financing came together, Ted Zoli?chief bridge engineer of HNTB Corp. and winner of the MacArthur Foundation's coveted genius grant?was on the case. Zoli knew that the new bridge would be much more than a point-A-to-point-B proposition: It is playing a big role in jump-starting Detroit's and Michigan's economic engines. Achieving that goal has been helped by the fact that the bridge is publicly financed and generates public revenue. But the way the bridge itself came to be is also important.

Zoli, whose unmistakable designs now span waterways from Boston to Mumbai, built his career on a simple premise: "Cleverness in design and construction techniques can be a source of major savings in the cost of building and maintaining a bridge," he says.

In Detroit he went against the grain. Most bridge builders today prefer prefabricated steel orthotropic decks, an advanced technology also used in shipbuilding. But Zoli opted for a simpler, somewhat old-fashioned steel-reinforced grid deck on his Detroit bridge.

"The sections of an orthotropic deck would usually be manufactured outside the United States?probably in Brazil, Korea, or China," he says. "What worse thing could you do to Detroit? This was an opportunity to create an American-made bridge. Plus, I'm very interested in adapting technology that's maybe less sophisticated or less modern and reimagining what it could be."

While a high-tech orthotropic deck is generally more expensive than a grid deck, the latter requires more labor to fabricate and install. In job-hungry Michigan, Zoli reasoned, a vice became a virtue. Not only can the grid decking be manufactured locally, but a large crew is needed to fit together the deck plates?roughly 1000 laborers working over a six-year period.

Zoli lightheartedly calls the technology stupidly simple, because each deck section is an identical rectangular 8 x 10?foot steel piece. But when the sections are put in place, each angled a fraction of a degree, a gracefully curving roadway emerges, supported by a steel superstructure. Stupidly simple? Maybe. But also brilliant, durable, and expensive-looking without being expensive.

A final consideration was the site. Zoli advised positioning his bridge about 2 miles downriver from the Ambassador Bridge, far from downtown. "It really is a regional bridge," Zoli says. "It doesn't make sense to disrupt the heart of the city with all that truck traffic."

Zoli views bridge building primarily as an act of public service, not as a way of burnishing his personal legend. He rebels against the notion of "signature" structures, a concept embraced by many brand-name architects, so-called starchitects, who flourished in those heady years before the Great Recession descended. "Signature is something I want to take off these things," Zoli says. "This bridge is not an architectural monument or an engineering feat. It becomes monumental only if it's seen as something that serves the community."

Time for a doggie door? - Home Renovation Guide

September 27th, 2012 ?|? Published in pets

by Zach Buckley

iStock 000004036312XSmall Time for a doggie door? Here?s what you should consider?

?

If you?re the kind of pet guardian who?s always looking for a way to make your furry companion?s life a little sweeter, installing a doggie door might be on your list of home improvement projects. Doggie doors allow your pets to go in and out of the house independently (yes, cats can use them, too), so pets don?t have to interrupt you when they want to go outside. It sounds like an ideal scenario for both pets and owners, but there are pros and cons to installing a permanent doggie door.

Resale value

Installing a pet door does require cutting a hole in an exterior wall or door. If you end up not liking the door, you?ll have a major wall repair on your hands or you?ll need a new door. And potential buyers?? especially if they don?t have pets???may see a doggie door as detracting from a home?s value. Remember: Most buyers will decide?within the first eight seconds whether they?re interested in your home. If you plan to move in the next few years, think carefully about whether you should install a doggie door.

Creating convenience

Having a pet door means you won?t have to worry about rushing home to let the dog out. Dogs can snooze on the couch all day while you?re gone and go outside when they need to. And dogs that prefer to be outside can come inside if the weather changes unexpectedly. Plus, you may be able to sleep better knowing your dog can zip out at night for a restroom break.
But, dog doors don?t discriminate ? other neighborhood cats and dogs can enter your home, and even in urban areas, wildlife like rats, squirrels or?raccoons can get into the house through a pet door. Wild animals can do considerable damage to your home, but the errant rodent isn?t the biggest security breach to worry about. Recently,?four burglars gained access to a home?by crawling through a doggie door in the middle of the day. Electronic pet doors may be more secure than standard models, but you can take other steps to thwart burglars, too. Install the smallest possible door, adding a deadbolt at the top of the door where the pet door is installed, so burglars can?t reach through a doggie door and unlock the door to your home.

When your pets are part of your family, you want to do everything you can to make their lives happier. A pet door gives your animal companions more freedom while you?re away, and that makes your life happier too. Not everything about a pet door is positive, but for many pet lovers, the pros outweigh the cons. If you feel the same, installing a doggie door is a great weekend project that could offer benefits for years to come.

Germany's jobless rate falls to 6.5 percent

(AP) ? Germany's Federal Labor Agency says the country's jobless rate fell 0.3 percentage points to 6.5 percent in September compared to the previous month.

But, adjusted for seasonal factors, the rate remained steady at 6.8 percent and the absolute number of jobless rose slightly over August.

The Federal Labor Agency reported Thursday that some 2.788 million people were out of work in Europe's biggest economy in September.

The figure was down from 2.905 million jobless in August.

The agency said that taking into account seasonal factors the number of people out of work rose by 9,000 in September.

Compared to September 2011, the jobless rate was down 0.3 percentage points with 7,327 fewer people without work.

Making Easy Child Friendly Home Improvements | My Blog

Posted by crafty88 on Sep 25, 2012 in SPORTS | Comments Off

When you paint interior rooms during a home improvement project, allow extra drying time if your house is new. Newer homes are usually built with extremely effective (nearly air-tight) separation between the interior and exterior. While this is an advantage for you as a homeowner in most situations, when you paint inside, your paint will take longer to dry than the paint manufacturer might claim.

Here is a home improvement for working with contractors! If you are having work done, be sure to inform the head of the crew if you are not happy! In the ideal world, everyone would understand and do exactly what you want, the way you want it done! If that is not the case, speak to the head of the crew! You are paying the bills, and you are in charge. If you aren?t happy, speak up. If things don?t work out with that contractor, there are lots of others to choose from.

Dirty ceiling vents can make your home look bad. You can purchase and install new ceiling vents, giving your home a cleaner and neater look.

If you are doing any home improvements on the roof of your home, make sure you wear the proper shoes so that you keep yourself safe. Many accidents in home improvements happen from people falling off their roofs. Be careful up there by wearing the right shoes and tie yourself off whenever possible.

When wanting to make a living out of home improvement, it is important that you have great people skills. If you do not have great people skills, when dealing with your clients it is very likely that you would lose quite a few jobs. It is better to be a people person, and make the money you want!

Begin the installation of your new kitchen cabinets by drawing a horizontal benchmark line around the perimeter of your entire kitchen. This level line will provide a reference point for you to measure from when installing your wall and base cabinets. Your benchmark line should begin at the highest point of your floor.

New wallpaper can transform a room. Before you add wallpaper, you need to find out what type of wall is under the existing wallpaper. Usually walls are either drywall or plaster smoothed over lath. You can figure out what kind of wall you are dealing with by feeling the wall, plaster is harder, smoother, and colder than drywall. You can also try tapping the wall, drywall sounds hollow while plaster does not.

Smoke detectors are required for safety in your home. Many homes only put them in certain areas. You can increase the safety in your home, by installing additional detectors in places like bathrooms, kitchens and basements. These areas can sometimes be overlooked, though prone to fires as much or more than the rest of the house.

Soak your hands in salad oil after completing an oil painting job. The oil will help release the paint from where it has splattered on your hands. Salad oil smells better and is a lot safer than the typical cleanup choices of mineral spirits or kerosene.

When getting ready to prime a room that is going to be painted, have your primer tinted so that it is the same color as the paint you are using. The primer will still do its job, but instead of needing three coats of paint, your walls will require only two.

Removing wall paper is something that may sound easy, but it actually takes some skill. You need to know what type of wallpaper you need to remove, and what type of wall you have. Based on the wallpaper you have, you then either need to dry-strip it or soak it and scrape it off. Make sure you do your research to determine what needs be done.

In summary, there are some obvious ideas that have been tested over time, as well as some newer techniques that you may not have considered. Hopefully, as long as you follow what we suggest in this article, you can either get started with your home improvement project or improve on what you have already done.

A 5 Step Social Network Marketing Plan ? Internet Marketing Guide

Quality Web Hosting

A 5 Step Social Network Marketing Plan

Social network marketing offers huge potential to merchants both online and off. The immense and growing popularity of social network sites has lead to a stampede of marketers vying for some of that traffic. Online entrepreneurs however need to develop and stick to some type of plan or strategy that will enable them to effectively promote their goods and services within any online social networking community.

Social network sites as a whole are ?unstructured? insofar as their main intent is socializing which leads to a more casual and undisciplined atmosphere. Online entrepreneurs therefore must have a workable strategy in place prior to entering these social arenas so that their efforts are more focused and efficient.

Here is a 5 step marketing strategy that can be used within the social networking community to help marketers maintain their focus and get better results.

Establish Your Objectives

Before entering into the social network ?arena? if you have the intent to conduct some type of business determine in advance what your objectives are. Social network sites can be a lot of fun but if you are there to do business this fun can also be a distraction to you. By establishing your objectives beforehand you will be better able to maintain your focus and minimize any time you may waste.

Your goals may be to simply create more exposure, conduct a survey or promote something to the site members. Whatever your objectives, by defining them beforehand you will be able to avoid getting sidetracked thereby making more efficient use of your time.

Identify Your Market/Prospects

Social network sites as previously mentioned are largely unstructured since they are ?melting pots? of different people with varying interests. Your business objectives will likely only target a particular type of person or group. Identifying this segment or niche beforehand will make it much easier to categorize them while working within any social networking community. This will help you to better focus your efforts on those ?areas? that will give you the best results.

Don?t Be an Annoyance

No matter how focused you may be as a business person leave that drive at the door or at least keep it under wraps. These are social communities and not ?pitch-fests? for online marketers. If you identify that your intentions are only business you will have a difficult time making friends and/or acquaintances.

Blend In ? Interact

Social network sites have great traffic potential for marketers but effort needs to be invested gaining a relationship with your prospects first. You will want to take part in their discussions and even initiate some of your own. The more you inter-relate with site members the faster you will be accepted by them. Remember you are at the site to conduct business whereas they are there to socialize and this is a ?divide? you need to cross first.

Any way you look at it you will need to invest some time ?cultivating? the market you are developing on the site. Work prudently by identifying your market or prospects first and focusing your time and energy on them.

Keep At It

The rule of thumb you need to keep in mind when working social network sites for business purposes is to socialize first and be patient. You are a stranger to other members and they need to get ?comfortable? with you. It may take some time to gain members acceptance but considering the traffic potential the investment of your time will be worth it.

Social network marketing is a viable approach with tremendous potential for promoting goods and services on the internet. Due to the casual and undisciplined environment of the social networking community however marketers must be on guard so as to not lose the focus of their intentions. By customizing and implementing the 5 step marketing strategy we spoke of above merchants can become more effective and efficient at social network marketing. Is There Similarities between IVA and Debt Management Plan ...

People who are struggling to manage their personal finance find debt management plan and IVA as efficient solution to deal with the problem. These solutions are widely used by the debtors in UK.

IVA and debt management plan both are two different ways of similar problem but still there are several similarities in these two options.

People often get confused on these two options as both do the same thing that is reducing your monthly repayments to an affordable level in order to clear debts in full. Both options are available to help debtors having unmanageable debts like credit card bills, store card payments etc. Both options help to make your finance easier to manage.

In debt management plan as well as IVA all unsecured debts combined together so that you will make single payments towards whole debts. Instead of making separate payment to each creditor, you will make single payment to insolvency practitioner in case of IVA and service provider in case of DMP. Further, the amount will be distributed accordingly to your creditors. What you pay every month will be based upon your income and necessary expenses. However, these both options are dissimilar in several ways. That is also necessary to know before selecting any option.

IVA is available only for debtors having debts over ?15000 but DMP is available for everyone who is unable to meet with their payment obligations. IVA is legal binding between debtor and creditor whereas DMP based upon personal negotiation. Terms are strict in case of IVA and once enrolled in the option is difficult to make any changes.

These are some important things about IVA and debt management plan. Select any option that is more suitable according to your debts and financial circumstances. Once enrolled in any plan, try to complete it successfully to avoid any further difficulties.

Daniel Leo is an expert and professional debt advisor of UK. He works a lot to find debt consolidation loans and iva like debt repayment plans for consumers. Get more information on similarities between iva and debt management plan through this article source.

(AP) ? A factory in China owned by the manufacturer of Apple's iPhones resumed production Tuesday after a brawl by workers highlighted tensions that labor groups say were worsened by the pressure of a new iPhone launch.

Foxconn Technology Group and police said the cause of the unrest Sunday night was under investigation, but labor activists said the rollout of the iPhone 5 has led to longer working hours and more pressure on workers. Foxconn and police said as many as 2,000 employees were involved in the brawl and 40 people were reported injured.

The iPhone 5 debuted last week in the United States and eight other countries and Apple has a three- to four-week backlog of online orders. Foxconn has declined to say whether its one-day suspension of production Monday in Taiyuan might affect supplies. It did not respond to a request for comment on the labor groups' claims.

News reports and witnesses said the violence Sunday night in Taiyuan in northern China stemmed from a confrontation between a factory worker and a guard that escalated. One employee reached by telephone said the violence was fueled by workers' anger about mistreatment by Foxconn security guards and managers.

"Foxconn, some supervisors, and security guards never respect us," said the employee, who asked not to be identified by name. "We all have this anger toward them and they (the workers) wanted to destroy things to release this anger."

Production at the Taiyuan factory resumed on Tuesday, Foxconn said in a written statement. It did not respond to a request for information on the status of its investigation or whether policies at the factory might be changed.

Foxconn, owned by Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., is the world's biggest assembler of consumer electronics, with about 1.2 million workers in factories in Taiyuan, the southern city of Shenzhen, in Chengdu in the west and in Zhengzhou in central China. It makes iPhones and iPads for Apple and also assembles products for Microsoft Corp. and Hewlett-Packard Co.

Labor activists say the need to ramp up iPhone 5 production has increased pressure on Foxconn employees.

"Because of the launch of the iPhone 5, the workload of workers suddenly surges," said a Hong Kong group, Students & Scholars Against Corporate Misbehaviour, in a report this month. It said some employees interviewed at the Zhengzhou factory had not had a day off in the previous 30 days.

Foxconn has declined to say which products are made in each factory but another group, China Labor Watch, said the Taiyuan facility, which employs 79,000 people, is making the iPhone 5.

The group, based in New York City, complained that employees suffer "verbal and physical abuse" by guards.

"These workers must be treated with respect," it said in a statement. "And both Apple and Foxconn, with billions of dollars in profits every year, have both a legal and ethical obligation to uphold the rights of these workers."

Labor tensions in China have been aggravated by a slowing economy that is squeezing employers and a communist system that prohibits independent labor unions.

Many factories and other businesses have unions but they must be part of the state-sanctioned All-China Federation of Trade Unions. Workers complain leaders of local branches often are allied with management and fail to stand up for the workforce.

That means grievances over pay or other issues spiral into strikes and protests. In some cases, ACFTU representatives have scuffled with striking workers, trying to force them to return to work.

"They have no other way of voicing their grievances," said Geoffrey Crothall, communications director for China Labour Bulletin, a Hong Kong organization that promotes employee rights in China. "There are no formal channels of communication or ways of resolving grievances through peaceful negotiation."

Foxconn raised minimum pay and promised in March to limit hours after an auditor hired by Apple found Foxconn employees were regularly required to work more than 60 hours a week.

That review followed a rash of suicides at Foxconn facilities ? about a dozen since 2010 ? and an explosion at the iPad-making plant in Chengdu in May 2011 that killed four employees.

Foxconn's facilities are exceptionally large by the standards of a Chinese electronics industry in which most manufacturers employ hundreds or thousands of workers. Its flagship mainland factory in Shenzhen, near Hong Kong, has 250,000 workers. The Chengdu site has 100,000 and the company has said the Zhengzhou factory might eventually employ 300,000.

Foxconn also has faced criticism in the past over the conduct of its security guards.

In 2010, Foxconn's parent, Hon Hai, pledged its guards would obey the law and refrain from using threats or harassment after a videotape showing several beating workers was circulated on the Internet.

Foxconn employees have complained about what some critics call "military-style management."

"Workers are expected to obey their manager at all times, not to question but simply do what they are told," said Crothall. "That atmosphere is not conducive to a happy or contented workforce. It's a very dehumanizing way of treating workers."

Google Slaps Apple?s iOS Maps In Motorola Slide

Apple has decided to go Google-free as much as possible in iOS 6 yanking YouTube (for which Google was quick to react with a dedicated application) and Google Maps. iOS 6 now features Apple?s own mapping solution which is the target of a recent Motorola slide suggesting it will surely make you get lost.

The slap is a well deserved one as Apple?s mapping solution fails in many occasions. We?ve even started talking about a ?mapplegate? and the fruit-company is making major damage control promising improvements over time with usage. While we have no doubt that Apple will do everything in its power to improve Maps (and they will succeed) the current iteration inside iOS 6 (and the iPhone 5) is just simply awful (at least in my region, where Google Maps has grown to become accurate and detailed).

Of course, the slide is a Motorola slide but the comparison is applicable, with the same conclusions, in case of any Android-powered smartphone that uses Google Maps. However, since Motorola and Google are now acting as one in many cases, we?re tempted to believe that this might very well be Google?s response.

Many are asking Google for a dedicated Maps application for the iPhone. Whether that?s something Apple would allow in the AppStore is something unknown but if Mountain View wants Apple to hurt they could simply let the iPhone 5 (and its users) with memories of the good old maps; do you think Google should release a Maps applications? Do you think it should be free or paid?

Published: Sept. 22, 2012 at 4:44 PM

WASHINGTON, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Ryan Zimmerman and Ian Desmond each belted a three-run homer and Gio Gonzalez won his 20th game Saturday in the Washington Nationals' 10-4 win over Milwaukee.

The two blasts gave the National League East-leading Nationals a 9-0 lead and handed them a series-evening victory in the second contest of a four-game set.

Desmond finished with three hits while Adam LaRoche went 3-for-4 with a solo homer, two RBI and three runs scored. Washington banged out 13 hits.

Gonzalez (20-8) became the first major league pitcher to reach the 20-victory plateau this season -- and the first for the Nationals franchise since Ross Grimsley went 20-11 in 1978 for the Montreal Expos.

The left-hander won for the fourth time in five starts, limiting the Brewers to three runs (two earned) on three hits over seven innings, walking one and striking out five.

Milwaukee's Wily Peralta (2-1) absorbed the loss, yielding three runs on five hits over 2 2/3 innings.

Taylor Green hit a two-run homer for the Brewers, who came into the contest trailing the St. Louis Cardinals by 1 1/2 games for National League wild-card spot.

David J. Buller - Evolutionary Psychology: A Critique(PDF)

To summarize, the fundamental theoretical tenets of Evolutionary Psychology are these. First, the human mind consists of ??hundreds or thousands?? of ??genetically speci?ed?? modules, or special-purpose computational devices, each of which is an adaptation for solving a speci?c adaptive problem. Second, the information-processing functions of modules are designed to solve the problems of survival and reproduction that were faced by our Pleistocene hunter-gatherer ancestors. Yes, turrets. The red-eyed robotic guns of Portal are both loved and loathed. They are so shiny! And their sing-song voices are so sweet! And yet ... there are the bullets to consider. So many bullets.

Remember when Cave Johnson made the military-grade weapons available to consumers?for "Portal 2"? Yeeeah, that seemed like a good?idea.?And now these digital killers?have been brought to real life. Yes real life.?Which seems like a?very bad idea indeed.

Old School? ? DEN Blog Network

What do you consider ?old school??? I have to admit that for me it conjures memories of Ms. Pansy Taylor in 2nd grade who bent our hands back to smack them with a ruler at the least provocation. **shudder**? Thankfully that isn?t common anymore!

It comes to mind because?we commonly hear different uses of the phrase.? Just the other day my principal indicated in a faculty

meeting that we would go ?old school? with markers and poster paper.? Truth is we worked in groups on a Bloom?s higher level thinking activity and simply recorded the results on paper.? The papers were posted on the wall, we then traveled in groups adding to the information.? So is using paper to complete an quality activity really ?old school??? Sure, there are virtual spaces to achieve the same thing but is paper less valuable? Is?online more valuable if we are in the same room anyway? I personally love the fact that we moved.

A search of colloquialisms for ?old school? returns some interesting results.? Some people think of ?old school? as when things were done better, some say it is anything started in an earlier time, yet others believe it?s when something is old and no longer relevant.? There is even a Dickens reference.? In education now ?old school? is taboo.? With our digital world it is likened to 18th century pedagogy.? We envision desks in rows with children attentively sitting, pencil in hand.? Mindless thought control were the words from Pink Floyd.? I?m sure readers can think of timeless strategies that are excellent ways for students to learn.? Would these be ?old school? and better left behind?

There are teachers who will proclaim, ?I?m old school?.? The interesting theme with those who call themselves ?old school? is for the most part, the teachers don?t care to change the way they teach.?? Whatever their method of choice may be, they don?t care to try new things.? Perhaps ?old school? should be interchanged with inflexibility.? It could be they don?t know how to change.? Perhaps it is the consistency of using the same method over and over whether results are positive or not.

I don?t care to hear the term ?old school?, just like I think ?21st century learning? is an antiquated term considering we are over a decade into the era.? We need to quantify ?old school? so people aren?t afraid to do exciting and engaging activities just because there isn?t a digital component.? Variety is the spice of life!? Savvy teachers create a savory mix of strategies to hook learners and hopefully instill curiosity to learn more along the way.

Leave comments to share your definition of ?old school? OR ways you vary instruction, old or new school.

Who are Mitt Romney's 47 percent? A breakdown

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Just which 47 percent of Americans was Mitt Romney talking about? It's hard to say. He lumped together three different ways of sorting people in what he's called less-than-elegant remarks.

Each of those three groups ? likely Obama voters, people who get federal benefits and people who don't pay federal income taxes ? contains just under half of all Americans, in the neighborhood of 47 percent at a given moment. There's some overlap, but the three groups are quite distinct.

Confusingly, Romney spoke as if they're made up of the same batch of Americans.

A look at the three groups:

___

OBAMA VOTERS

What Romney said: "There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what."

He's right on the nose, according to the latest Associated Press-GfK poll: Forty-seven percent of likely voters say they support Obama. And 46 percent say they support Romney, essentially a tie. This number fluctuates from poll to poll and week to week and could shift substantially before Election Day.

Who they are:

?Most are employed: Sixty-two percent of the Obama voters work, including the 10 percent working only part time. A fourth are retired. Five percent say they're temporarily unemployed.

?Most earn higher-than-average wages. Fifty-six percent have household incomes above the U.S. median of $50,000. Just 16 percent have incomes below $30,000, and about the same share (20 percent) have incomes of $100,000 or more.

?They're all ages but skew younger than Romney's voters: Twenty percent are senior citizens and 12 percent are under age 30.

?They're more educated than the overall population: Forty-three percent boast four-year college degrees or above; 21 percent topped out with a high school diploma.

___

PEOPLE WHO GET FEDERAL BENEFITS

What Romney said: "There are 47 percent ... who are dependent on government ... who believe they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it."

Whether they are dependent and believe they are entitled to anything is arguable, but Romney's statistic is about right ? 49 percent of the U.S. population receive some kind of federal benefits, including Social Security and Medicare, according to the most recent Census Bureau data. Looking only at people who receive benefits that are based on financial need, such as food stamps, the portion is smaller ? just over a third of the population. Many people get more than one type of benefit.

The biggest programs and their percentage of the U.S. population:

?Medicaid: 26 percent

?Social Security: 16 percent

?Food stamps: 16 percent

?Medicare: 15 percent

?Women, Infants and Children food program: 8 percent

___

THOSE WHO PAY NO FEDERAL INCOME TAX

What Romney said: "Forty-seven percent of Americans pay no income tax."

Romney's about on target ? 46 percent of U.S. households paid no federal income tax last year, according to a study by the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center. Most do pay other federal taxes, including Medicare and Social Security withholding. And they're not all poor. Some middle-income and wealthy families escape income tax because of deductions, credits and investment tax preferences.

Why these people don't pay:

?About half don't earn enough money for a household of their size to owe income tax. For example, a family of four earning less than $26,400 wouldn't pay.

?About 22 percent get tax breaks for senior citizens that offset their income.

?About 15 percent get tax breaks for the working poor or low-income parents.

?Almost 3 percent get tax breaks for college tuition or other education expenses.

Who they are:

?The vast majority have below-average earnings: Among all who don't owe, 9 out of 10 make $50,000 or less.

?But some of the wealthy escape taxes, including about 4,000 households earning more than $1 million a year.

Getting Auto Financing While Having Low Credit Scores | Radical ...

Credit scores are important in getting financing. One of the things you?ll need to get a loan or mortgage this year would be having good credit scores. But if you need auto financing but you have a poor credit score, what can you do? Here are ways to help you get out of this dilemma.

1. Credit Unions

Credit unions are different from banks in many ways. If you?re eligible to join a credit union or you have joined a credit union, you?re in luck. Most credit unions provide affordable payment options, interest rates and re-financing. All of these can be given to you if you?re approved after an interview and that you comply with the credit union?s other requirements.

2. Online Lenders

The easy and more affordable ways of making transactions using the Internet has given way for many lenders to make their deals flexible for many customers. Some lenders provide more affordable auto financing rates than most banks can provide. However, sometimes, there are catches when working with online lenders. They can impose hidden fees that they present by the end of the paying term. Be sure that when working with an online lender, you can trust them and that they are approved by the government or proper authorities.

3. Buy Here, Pay Here

Car dealerships allow customers to have in-house financing through a ?buy here, pay here? method. Buy here, pay here allows customers with poor credit scores to recover from their financial mishap by getting the chance to purchase a vehicle suitable for their financial capability. The catch of most buy here, pay here payment methods is that customers need to pay for the car personally in the car dealership branch. Car dealerships also offer good interest rates for most in house financing.
