'Indestructible' botnet uncovered
Cracking the TDL-4 botnet is going to be hard, say security experts. More than four million PCs have been enrolled in a botnet security experts say is almost 'indestructible'
The botnet, known as TDL, targets Windows PCs and tries hard to avoid detection and even harder to shut down.
Code that hijacks a PC hides in places security software rarely looks and the botnet is controlled using custom-made encryption.
Security researchers said recent botnet shutdowns had made TDL's controllers harden it against investigation.
The 4.5 million PCs have become victims over the last three months following the appearance of the fourth version of the TDL virus.
The changes introduced in TDL-4 made it the "most sophisticated threat today," wrote Kaspersky Labs security researchers Sergey Golovanov and Igor Soumenkov in a detailed analysis of the virus.
"The owners of TDL are essentially trying to create an 'indestructible' botnet that is protected against attacks, competitors, and anti-virus companies," wrote the researchers.
Recent successes by security companies and law enforcement against botnets have led to spam levels dropping to about 75% of all e-mail sent, shows analysis by Symantec.
A botnet is a network of home computers that have been infected by a virus that allows a hi-tech criminal to use them remotely. Often botnet controllers steal data from victims' PCs or use the machines to send out spam or carry out other attacks.
The TDL virus spreads via booby-trapped websites and infects a machine by exploiting unpatched vulnerabilities. The virus has been found lurking on sites offering porn and pirated movies as well as those that let people store video and image files.

The virus installs itself in a Windows system file known as the master boot record. This file holds the list of instructions to get a computer started and is a good place to hide because it is rarely scanned by standard anti-virus programs.
The majority of victims, 28%, are in the US but significant numbers are in India (7%) and the UK (5%). Smaller numbers, 3%, are found in France, Germany and Canada.
However, wrote the researchers, it is the way the botnet operates that makes it so hard to tackle and shut down.
The makers of TDL-4 have cooked up their own encryption system to protect communication between those controlling the botnet. This makes it hard to do any significant analysis of traffic between hijacked PCs and the botnet's controllers.
In addition, TDL-4 sends out instructions to infected machines using a public peer-to-peer network rather than centralised command systems. This foils analysis because it removes the need for command servers that regularly communicate with infected machines.
"For all intents and purposes, [TDL-4] is very tough to remove," said Joe Stewart, director of malware research at Dell SecureWorks to Computerworld. "It's definitely one of the most sophisticated botnets out there."
However, the sophistication of TDL-4 might aid in its downfall, said the Kaspersky researchers who found bugs in the complex code. This let them pry on databases logging how many infections TDL-4 had racked up and was aiding their investigation into its creators.

My Forever Love ? A Father's Day Tribute
?Bye dad.? ?I love you!? ?We?ll see you soon.? I said softly as we settled him in the front seat of our car. My husband Matt was taking dad (my father-in-law) back to his home in Fresno.
They drove out of the driveway and down the road. I breathed a long sigh of relief. We had brought dad home for 3 days, back to where he?d lived for the past 8 years. Readjusting back to our home proved much more difficult than we had anticipated. Fresno was dad?s home now and he was happy there.
Matt slept each night on the couch beside his bed, because at 93 he sometimes gets confused when he wakes up in the night. Three weeks prior Dad had had surgery. The surgery was a difficult process and dad wasn?t gaining strength back very quickly. He looked feeble and frail. He was pale and often light headed.
Matt got little sleep as dad had severe pain in his hips and legs. Matt would massage his joints, re-situate him on his bed and place pillows under and beside him.
When morning came Matt went to work and I took over. Breakfast and bath were on my agenda for dad. Both were complete failures. Dad almost passed out three different times, his catheter began leaking, and holding him up proved much more daunting than I imagined. Soon I was in tears. My sister came to help and 3 hours later we were fixing breakfast. ?I?m in way over my head.? I cried to my sister. ?We can?t do this alone!?
Dad couldn?t be left alone at all. He required 24 hour, minute by minute care and attention. Family and friends came to help us, and others brought meals.
The next day Matt stayed with dad while I went to work. Before I left I came in to dad?s room. There was Matt lovingly sponge bathing dad, limb by limb. After he washed an area, he would gently massage lotion onto his dry skin. Step by step, time after time, Matt would repeat this process until dad was washed and dressed.
Being dad?s youngest; Matt was now in the role of lovingly fathering his own father. Sleeping next to his bed so he wouldn?t be afraid, massaging his aches and pains, bathing, dressing and feeding his dad were all necessary components to his care.
As I write this I?m filled with tremendous love and gratitude for Matt. I want him to know that every gentle act he does is recorded and seen by our heavenly Father who is incredibly proud of how he?s served his parents, his sons and me.
Matt has led by example. Actions are always heard much louder than words ever could be. The way he?s always loved me is teaching his sons the role of a good husband and faithful companion.
I?ve seen the countless baseball pitches he?s caught in the backyard, the wrestling matches he?s engaged in when it?s been 3 boys to one and all the times he?s played king of the mountain in the swimming pool. Reading stories to our sons, doing daily Bible reading and prayer with them have ingrained life long values in their hearts and minds forever.
I am eternally grateful for Matt. He is my forever love! I?m so very proud of the daddy he is and the man he?s become as he?s sought to seek the Lord each day. This Father?s Day I salute you Matt and all the other dads who have sacrificed so much in a multitude of ways. We appreciate you so very much!

Future dry weather will continue to put pressure on water levels, the Environment Agency says Drought conditions in eastern England are not over, despite above average rainfall across England in Wales so far in June, the Environment Agency says.
It comes as the Met Office says the East Midlands, east and south east of England could see a heatwave in coming days and temperatures of 32C (90C).
But experts say many rivers still have below normal levels and "environmental impacts" remain a concern.
The Environment Agency said more dry weather could see other areas affected.
Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, parts of Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire and western Norfolk remain in a state of drought and the Environment Agency is urging people to continue to use water wisely.
It added that drought conditions could spread into central England and further east if July remains dry.
Parts of the Midlands are said to be at "high risk" of drought while south west England, south east England and south Wales remain at "moderate risk".
So far in June, south west England has received 130% of the monthly average rainfall, with south east England seeing 118% and Wales 101%. Central and eastern England had 75% and 83% of monthly average rainfall in June respectively.
Trevor Bishop, the Environment Agency's head of water resources, said: "The wetter weather has helped to lessen impacts on the environment this week.

Peter Falk, TV's rumpled Columbo, has died | The Associated Press ...
Peter Falk, the stage and movie actor who became identified as the squinty, rumpled detective in "Columbo," which spanned 30 years in prime-time television and established one of the most iconic characters in movie police work, has died. He was 83.
Falk died Thursday in his Beverly Hills home, according to a statement released Friday by family friend Larry Larson.
In a court document filed in December 2008, Falk's daughter Catherine Falk said her father was suffering from Alzheimer's disease.
"Columbo" began its history in 1971 as part of the NBC Sunday Mystery Movie series, appearing every third week. The show became by far the most popular of the three mysteries, the others being "McCloud" and "McMillan and Wife."
Falk was reportedly paid $250,000 a movie and could have made much more if he had accepted an offer to convert "Columbo" into a weekly series. He declined, reasoning that carrying a weekly detective series would be too great a burden.
Columbo ? he never had a first name ? presented a contrast to other TV detectives. "He looks like a flood victim," Falk once said. "You feel sorry for him. He appears to be seeing nothing, but he's seeing everything. Underneath his dishevelment, a good mind is at work."
NBC canceled the three series in 1977. In 1989 ABC offered "Columbo" in a two-hour format usually appearing once or twice a season. The movies continued into the 21st century. "Columbo" appeared in 26 foreign countries and was a particular favorite in France and Iran.
Columbo's trademark was an ancient raincoat Falk had once bought for himself. After 25 years on television, the coat became so tattered it had to be replaced.
Peter Michael Falk was born Sept. 16, 1927, in New York City and grew up in Ossining, N.Y., where his parents ran a clothing store. At 3 he had one eye removed because of cancer. "When something like that happens early," he said in a 1963 Associated Press interview, "you learn to live with it. It became the joke of the neighborhood. If the umpire ruled me out on a bad call, I'd take the fake eye out and hand it to him."
When Falk was starting as an actor in New York, an agent told him, "Of course, you won't be able to work in movies or TV because of your eye." Falk would later win two Oscar nominations ("Murder, Inc.," 1960; "Pocketful of Miracles," 1961) and collect five Emmys.
After serving as a cook in the merchant marine and receiving a master's degree in public administration from Syracuse University, he worked as an efficiency expert for the budget bureau of the state of Connecticut. He also acted in amateur theater and was encouraged to become a professional by actress-teacher Eva La Gallienne.
An appearance in "The Iceman Cometh" off-Broadway led to other classical parts, notably as Joseph Stalin in "The Passion of Joseph D." In 1971 Falk scored a hit in Neil Simon's "The Prisoner of Second Avenue."
Falk made his film debut in 1958 with "Wind Across the Everglades" and established himself as a talented character actor with his performance as the vicious killer Abe Reles in "Murder, Inc." Among his other movies: "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World," ''Robin and the Seven Hoods," ''The Great Race," ''Luv," ''Castle Keep," ''The Cheap Detective," ''The Brinks Job," ''The In-Laws," ''The Princess Bride."
Falk also appeared in a number of art house favorites, including the semi-improvisational films "Husbands" and "A Woman Under the Influence," directed by his friend John Cassavetes, and Wim Wenders' "Wings of Desire," in which he played himself. Falk became prominent in television movies, beginning with his first Emmy for "The Price of Tomatoes" in 1961. His four other Emmys were for "Columbo."
He was married to pianist Alyce Mayo in 1960; they had two daughters, Jackie and Catherine, and divorced in 1976. The following year he married actress Shera Danese. They filed for divorce twice and reconciled each time.
When not working, Falk spent time in the garage of his Beverly Hills home. He had converted it into a studio where he created charcoal drawings. He took up art in New York when he was in the Simon play and one day happened into the Art Students League.

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Anyone contemplating Botox treatments for excessive sweating might want to consider the case of a U.S. teen-ager.
The 17-year-old girl, a typical whiz at sending text messages from her phone, had Botox injections to control excessive sweating on her palms -- and afterwards, she couldn't text as well, according to a case study published in Archives of Dermatology.

Prescription antiperspirants are usually the first treatment step. But when the teen didn't get any better, Lehman moved on to Botox -- which, given in tiny injections on the palm and fingers, blocks the signal that causes sweat to be released.
But it also relaxes other muscles not related to sweating in the process.
A week after getting Botox, the patient sweated much less, but her texting skills had decreased as well, Lehman reported. The impairment lasted for about six weeks, although the patient did not need a new Botox injection for several months.
Other doctors said that hand weakness was a known side effect of Botox treatments, but that most patients with hyperhidrosis are willing to take the trade-off because the condition interferes with their lives so much.
The Botox dose or administration technique can be changed if patients have side effects the first time around. Botox treatments for hyperhidrosis have to be repeated every few months, although the time between treatments often increases after the first few rounds.
Madu Onwudike, who has researched Botox use for hyperhidrosis at Royal Bolton Hospital in the United Kingdom, said Botox isn't his first treatment choice for the condition because it's possible that some muscle problems will persist.
"In my experience the weakness is not permanent but the muscle wasting may be permanent in patients receiving recurrent injections," he said.
"Generally patients cope well with the transient weakness and rarely regret the treatment because of this side effect."
