Nigerian Islamic cleric charged over post-vote blast (AFP)

KANO, Nigeria (AFP) ? Nigerian police have charged a fiery Muslim cleric with an alleged post-election bombing in April that killed the person assembling the explosive, a court clerk said Tuesday.

Awwal Adam Albani, head of a Salafi Islamic sect, appeared before court on Monday for allegedly masterminding the bomb plot in the northern city of Kaduna four days after presidential elections, Hamisu Ibrahim told AFP.

"Albani was arraigned along with three other suspects on a three-count charge of criminal conspiracy, act of terrorism with the intent to commit culpable homicide and mischief through explosives," he said.

They pleaded not guilty and were ordered back to jail until July 4 for another hearing, he said.

The bomb exploded on April 23, killing the person assembling it and injuring his three accomplices who were later arrested by the police, according to the charge sheet.

The police found 11 guns and four locally made bombs in the possession of the suspects who confessed to being disciples of Albani and planting the bomb on his orders.

The cleric was arrested last week in the city of Zaria, 7O kilometres (43 miles) north of Kaduna city.

Zaria is the home town of Vice President Namadi Sambo and was among several Kaduna State cities that were rocked by deadly post-election violence.

Three days of rioting after the vote was won by Goodluck Jonathan, a southern Christian, left more than 800 people dead.
