Coal India falls to record low; earnings lag expectations

MUMBAI (Reuters) - Shares in Coal India fell more than 2 percent to a record low on Monday after posting its first quarterly profit decline in five quarters, saying lower sales realisations and higher wage and diesel costs were to blame.

The state-owned miner said on Saturday net profit for its fiscal first quarter fell to 37.31 billion rupees. Analysts, on average, had forecast net profit of 42.40 billion rupees, according to Thomson Reuters Starmine data.

Coal India shares were down 2.4 percent at 9:17 a.m., after earlier hitting a record low at 248.25 rupees. (Reporting by Abhishek Vishnoi; Editing by Rafael Nam)

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. diplomatic posts in 19 cities in the Muslim world will be closed at least through the end of this week, the State Department said Sunday, citing "an abundance of caution."

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the decision to keep the embassies and consulates closed is "not an indication of a new threat."

She said the continued closures are "merely an indication of our commitment to exercise caution and take appropriate steps to protect our employees, including local employees, and visitors to our facilities."

Diplomatic facilities will remain closed in Egypt, Jordan, Libya, Yemen, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, among other countries, through Saturday, Aug. 10. The U.S. has decided to reopen some posts on Monday, including those in Kabul, Afghanistan and Baghdad.

The Obama administration announced Friday that the posts would be closed over the weekend and the State Department announced a global travel alert, warning that al-Qaida or its allies might target either U.S. government or private American interests.

The weekend closure of nearly two dozen U.S. diplomatic posts resulted from the gravest terrorist threat seen in years, the top Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee said Sunday.

Sen. Saxby Chambliss said "the chatter" intercepted by U.S. intelligence agencies led the Obama administration to shutter the embassies and consulates and issue a global travel warning to Americans.

"Chatter means conversation among terrorists about the planning that's going on ? very reminiscent of what we saw pre-9/11," Chambliss, R-Ga., told NBC's "Meet the Press."

"This is the most serious threat that I've seen in the last several years," he said.

Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger of Maryland, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, told ABC's "This Week" that the threat intercepted from "high-level people in al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula" was about a "major attack."

Yemen is home to al-Qaida's most dangerous affiliate, blamed for several notable terrorist plots on the United States. They include the foiled Christmas Day 2009 effort to bomb an airliner over Detroit and the explosives-laden parcels intercepted the following year aboard cargo flights.

Rep. Peter King, who leads the House Homeland Security subcommittee on counterterrorism and intelligence, said the threat included dates but not locations of possible attacks.

"The threat was specific as to how enormous it was going to be and also that certain dates were given," King, R-N.Y., said on ABC.

Rep. Adam Schiff, a House Intelligence Committee member, said the "breadth" of the closures suggests U.S. authorities are concerned about a potential repeat of last year's riots and attacks at multiple embassies, including the deadly assault in Benghazi, Libya, where the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans were killed.

In addition, Interpol, the French-based international policy agency, has issued a global security alert in connection with suspected al-Qaida involvement in several recent prison escapes including those in Iraq, Libya and Pakistan.

Those prison breaks add to the concerns about an attack, said Schiff, D-Calif., also noting the approaching end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

"So you have a lot things coming together. ... But all of that would not be enough without having some particularly specific information," he said.

The Obama administration's decision to close the embassies and the lawmakers' general discussion about the threats come at a sensitive time as the government tries to defend recently disclosed surveillance programs that have stirred deep privacy concerns and raised the potential of the first serious retrenchment in terrorism-fighting efforts since Sept. 11.

The Senate Judiciary Committee chairman has scoffed at the assertion by the head of the National Security Agency that government methods used to collect telephone and email data have helped foil 54 terror plots.

Schiff said he has seen no evidence linking the latest warnings to that agency's collection of "vast amounts of domestic data."

Other lawmakers defended the administration's response and promoted the work of the NSA in unearthing the intelligence that lead to the security warnings.

"The bottom line is ... that the NSA's job is to do foreign intelligence," Ruppersburger said. "The whole purpose is to collect information to protect us."

Added King, a frequent critic of President Barack Obama, "Whether or not there was any controversy over the NSA at all, all these actions would have been taken."

Friday's warning from the State Department urged American travelers to take extra precautions overseas, citing potential dangers involved with public transportation systems and other prime sites for tourists. It noted that previous terrorist attacks have centered on subway and rail networks as well as airplanes and boats. It suggested travelers sign up for State Department alerts and register with U.S. consulates in the countries they visit. The alert expires Aug. 31.

The statement said al-Qaida or its allies might target either U.S. government or private American interests.

Kenyan lawyer sues Israel, Italy over killing of Jesus

  • ?The ICJ has no jurisdiction for such a case ?Spokesperson

A Kenyan lawyer has filed a petition with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, suggesting that the trial and crucifixion of Jesus Christ was unlawful, and The State of Israel among others should be held responsible.

Dola Indidis, a lawyer and former spokesman of the Kenyan Judiciary is reportedly attempting to sue Tiberius (Emperor of Rome 42 BC-37AD), Pontius Pilate, a selection of Jewish elders, King Herod, the Republic of Italy and the State of Israel.

?Evidence today is on record in the Bible, and you cannot discredit the Bible,? Indidis said. Even though those he suggests should have been convicted during the original trial have not been alive for more than 2000 years, Indidis insists that the government for whom they acted can and should still be held responsible. ?I filed the case because it?s my duty to uphold the dignity of Jesus and I have gone to the ICJ to seek justice for the man from Nazareth.

His selective and malicious prosecution violated his human rights through judicial misconduct, abuse of office, bias and prejudice,? he said Indidis apparently named the states of Italy and Israel in the lawsuit because upon the attainment of independence, the two states incorporated the laws of the Roman Empire that were in force at the time of the Crucifixion.

He is challenging the mode of questioning used during Jesus? trial, prosecution, hearing and sentencing; the form of punishment meted out on him while undergoing judicial proceedings and the substance of the information used to convict him.

The case was first filed in the High Court in Nairobi, but was rejected. Indidis then applied to have it heard at the ICJ, which is rumoured to have constituted a pre-trial panel to consider the case.

When asked about the case, however, a spokesperson for the ICJ said, ?The ICJ has no jurisdiction for such a case. The ICJ settles disputes between states. It is not even theoretically possible for us to consider this case.?

Indidis says he wants to establish what crime Jesus was charged with and prays that the court decides ?that the proceedings before the Roman courts were a nullity in law, for they did not conform to the rule of law at the material time and any time thereafter.?

?Some of those present spat in his face, struck him with their fists, slapped him, taunted him, and pronounced him worthy of death,? Indidis argues. When Jesus died, Indidis insists, he was not given an opportunity to be heard.

?I am suing as a friend,? he said. Indidis insisted on the validity of his case, saying ?I know with a matter of fact and truth we have a good case with a high probability of success and I hope it is done in my lifetime.?

Rouhani becomes new Iranian president

By Yeganheh Torbati and Marcus George

Moderate cleric Hassan Rouhani took office as Iran?s president on Saturday, succeeding Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, after Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei endorsed him, Iranian media said.

Rouhani?s resounding election win in June raised hopes of a negotiated end to the dispute over Iran?s nuclear programme. That would avert a possible new war in the Middle East.

Khamenei kissed Rouhani on the cheek and the new president kissed the leader on his lapel.

The start of Rouhani?s presidency puts an end to Ahmadinejad?s eight years in office during which Iran grew more isolated and came under wide-ranging United Nations, U.S. and European Union sanctions over its nuclear programme, putting enormous pressure on the economy.

Rouhani faces huge challenges, including combating inflation he put last month at 42 percent, bringing down high unemployment and bridging the political divisions between conservative, moderate and reformist factions.

His most immediate test is persuading parliament to approve his candidates for cabinet positions, which he is expected to introduce on Sunday after he takes the oath of office.

?Rouhani will certainly appoint more competent men and women to key economic ministries and institutions. He will also follow saner economic policies,? said Shaul Bakhash, an Iran historian at George Mason University in Virginia.

?But the economic problems are staggering ? Above all, without a serious easing of sanctions, it is difficult to see how Rouhani can get the economy moving again.?

(AP) ? If Twitter is the chirping chatterbox of the Internet, trolls are its dark underground denizens.

The collision of the two is driving a debate in Britain about the scale of online hatred and the limits of Internet free speech.

The furor erupted this week after several women went public about the sexually explicit and often luridly violent abuse they receive on Twitter from trolls ? online bullies and provocateurs who send abusive or disruptive messages, often for their own amusement.

Many regard trolls as an annoyance to be ignored, but there are growing calls for action when their abuse crosses over into threats.

Police are investigating a threat of rape and murder made to Labour Party lawmaker Stella Creasy by a user with the Twitter name @killcreasynow. The crude and graphically violent tweet was one of many Creasy received after she tweeted in support of feminist campaigner Caroline Criado-Perez. Criado-Perez was sent a torrent of invective after she campaigned, successfully, for novelist Jane Austen to appear on a British banknote.

Two men have been arrested in connection with the Twitter threats, but have not been charged.

Such abuse is neither new nor confined to Britain. American writer Lindy West wrote earlier this year about receiving a slew of sexual threats after she appeared on a TV debate about rape jokes.

But the subject has received an unprecedented level of public exposure this week, sparking debates on British radio and television news programs and articles in national newspapers ? even the tabloids. Creasy and Criado-Perez are among a growing group who have decided to face down the abusers, retweeting their messages in an attempt to "name and shame" the offenders, and reporting the most threatening messages to police.

"This is not about Twitter," Creasy told the BBC. "This is about hatred of women and hatred of women who speak up."

Online trolls don't just target women, although women come in for a specific kind of abuse, says Claire Hardaker, a lecturer at Lancaster University in northwest England who researches aggression, deception and manipulation online.

Trolls pick out one defining characteristic to attack their victims, she said. "If you are a Muslim, it's all Islamophobia. If you are gay, it's all homophobia. If you are a woman, it's all misogyny."

Hardaker said that while the stereotypical image of a troll is of a man in his late teens or early 20s, they are a surprisingly disparate group ? 30-something women and men in their 60s have been caught trolling.

The motivation ranges from revenge to entertainment to boredom. While it seems a solitary activity, there is an online community of trolls who use sites like the anarchic forum 4Chan used to swap congratulations and criticism and egg one another on.

And while the technology is new, the impulses are as old as time.

"We have long been entertained by watching violence happen to other people," Hardaker said. "It isn't that the Internet has turned us into monsters. It has produced this online Colosseum where we can go and throw people to the lions ourselves."

The relative anonymity of the Internet makes online abuse hard to stop. Many trolls change online identities frequently and use software that masks their ISP address, making them hard to track down. Police are sometimes reluctant to spend major resources on what can be seen as minor online crime.

British campaigners are calling for Twitter to do more to block bad behavior. The site's rules explicitly bar threats of violence, but users currently have to fill out an online form to report abuse, a process some say is time-consuming and unwieldy. An online petition calling for the social networking site to establish a single "report abuse" button has more than 100,000 signatures.

Lawmaker John Whittingdale, the head of Parliament's Culture, Media and Sport Committee, said the group was planning to summon Twitter bosses to appear before it in the fall, "to determine whether they are doing as much as they can or whether they should do more."

Twitter insists it takes the issue seriously and is planning to expand an abuse-reporting button, already available on its iPhone app, to other platforms.

"We absolutely do work with law enforcement on issues like these," Del Harvey, Twitter's senior director of trust and safety, told the BBC's "Newsnight" program. "These sorts of threats are against the rules. We suspend accounts when they're reported to us. We're working to make it easier to report those accounts. We think this is really important."

Some say Twitter can't, and shouldn't, police the Internet. While the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that First Amendment protections of freedom of speech apply to the Internet, restrictions on online expression in other Western democracies vary widely.

In Germany, where it is an offense to deny the Holocaust, a neo-Nazi group has had its Twitter account blocked. In Britain, hundreds of people are charged each year for sending menacing, indecent, offensive or obscene messages. People have been convicted for making offensive comments about a murdered child and for posting on Facebook that soldiers "should die and go to hell."

Some civil libertarians are wary of criminalizing even more online activity.

They argue that most online talk is just that ? talk, never intended to translate into action. GQ magazine recently reprinted some of the blood-curdling threats it received from One Direction fans after running a cover story on the boy band that some fans found insufficiently reverential. Many of the comments were obscene, intemperate and violent ? but few people suggest the tweeters should be prosecuted.

Padraig Reidy of civil liberties group Index on Censorship cautioned that the "report abuse" button was no quick fix ? it could itself be abused by governments to silence their opponents or by celebrities to muzzle their critics.

He said stopping "real harassment, threats and incitement" would involve cooperation by Twitter, police, prosecutors and users of social networking sites.

"We often think that just because things are happening online there is a technical solution to make the Web a better place," Reidy said. "But it's going to take real engagement."

Anti-trolling campaigners have already taken matters into their own hands ? retweeting abuse in order to expose the problem.

A group of women in Britain has coined the #everydaysexism hashtag to chronicle the extent of misogyny many women still face. Last month it was used to draw attention to dozens of tweets calling Wimbledon women's tennis champion Marion Bartoli "fat," ''ugly," a "slut" and even more offensive terms.

Sometimes such "naming and shaming" can be remarkably effective. This week a Twitter troll sent an abusive and sexually explicit tweet to Mary Beard, a Cambridge University classicist and television presenter. Beard retweeted it to her 43,000 followers, and soon a second Twitter user was offering to supply the mailing address of the offender's mother so she could see what her son had written.

He quickly became contrite. "I was wrong and very rude," he wrote. "Hope this can be forgotten and forgiven."

Conservative group continues effort to warn about enrolling in coverage under Obamacare

A conservative advocacy group that spent millions on issue ads during the 2012 election cycle plans to continue a seven-figure campaign that aims to convince people to think twice before signing up for health insurance exchanges under the Affordable Care Act.

Americans for Prosperity, a group partially funded by donors David and Charles Koch, plans to release a? television ad Wednesday to raise questions about the law. Instead of focusing on the law?s repeal, AFP's newest effort will argue that health insurance premiums will rise for those who sign up for the exchanges. The group also is making plans to dispatch activists to sporting events, festivals and town fairs in multiple states for the next several months to warn people that they could have fewer medical choices under the law.

?This is more about going to folks where they are and talking to them,? AFP President Tim Phillips told Yahoo News. ?We?re saying, make sure you understand the impact this law will have on you if you sign up.?

The federal government will begin to implement key parts of the Affordable Care Act, the health insurance overhaul commonly called Obamacare that passed along partisan lines and was signed by President Barack Obama in 2010, as early as 2014. In order for the law to function as planned, millions of Americans must pro-actively sign up for health insurance plans enacted by the legislation. The Obama administration is urging people to enroll. An independent group, Enroll America, has launched a nationwide campaign to provide information about how to take part in the exchanges.

But a coalition of conservative groups is urging people not to sign up at all, which, if effective, would make it difficult for many parts of the law to function. The AFP campaign, which began with an initial $700,000 investment for an ad in July, won?t explicitly advise people not to sign up, but the insinuation is strong.

?The reason we?re doing this now is that this is the final run-up to final implementation,? Phillips told Yahoo News. ?As a lot of Americans decide what to do when the Enroll America paid community organizer shows up at an event in their community, we want them to consider exactly what this law means for them personally. So we want to run these ads now before they make that decision.?

Enrollment for the exchanges is set to begin in October.

Common genetic ancestors lived during roughly same time period

[unable to retrieve full-text content]Mitochondrial Eve and Y-chromosomal Adam -- two individuals who passed down a portion of their genomes to the vast expanse of humanity -- are known as our most recent common ancestors, or MRCAs. But many aspects of their existence, including when they lived, are shrouded in mystery. Now, a new study indicates the two roughly overlapped during evolutionary time: from between 120,000 to 156,000 years ago for the man, and between 99,000 and 148,000 years ago for the woman.

India, China developing mechanism to prevent face-offs: Antony

New Delhi: India and China are trying to develop effective mechanisms to prevent the "embarrassing" face-offs between their troops along the "disputed" points of the Line of Actual Control, Defence Minister AK Antony said in New Delhi on Friday.

Terming the 21-day stand-off between the two sides in Depsang valley in Daulat Beg Oldi area as an "unusual" incident, the Defence Minister said the two countries will meet soon in Beijing to discuss issues and try to find a solution for such "unpleasant incidents".

"Till the final settlement of the border issue, we are trying to find out more effective mechanisms to prevent occasional incidents. There are many points in the LAC that are disputed and they are patrolled by both sides. So, sometimes it leads to some face-off," he said on the 14th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas.

India, China developing mechanism to prevent face-offs: Antony

The Defence Minister said that there are disputed points where both sides are going and that causes some embarrassing situations.

The Minister was asked to comment on the rising incursions by the Chinese troops into the Indian territory along the LAC in Ladakh and Northeastern sectors.

Antony said, "There are disputed points where both sides are going there which sometimes causes some embarrassing situations."

He said after the Depsang incident in April, India and China had "free and frank" talks and "we are trying to have more border personnel meeting places and have more effective mechanisms to prevent such unpleasant incidents."

"On the one side, both sides are trying to find a long term solution to the long pending border dispute. Till that time, our aim is to maintain peace and tranquillity at the border," Antony said.

On the recent third meeting of the Joint Working Group between the two sides, the Minister said free and frank discussions were held between both sides.

"We are going to have another round of this meeting in Beijing soon on this issue. So, I think we will be able to find out a solutions to such unpleasant incidents on the border," he said.

In the recent past, there have been several incidents of incursions in Ladakh sector where Chinese troops have entered well within Indian side and stayed there for long hours before returning to their areas.

In one such incident, Chinese troops had entered Chumar area in Ladakh on July 16-17 on horses and ponies and demanded that Indian troops leave the area staking claim over it.

In the last two weeks, there have been at least five incursions in the area and around 150 incidents in the last seven months. Meanwhile, commenting on the alleged "mistreatment" of armed forces personnel and the lack of accommodation for them, Antony said though the situation had improved in comparison with past but "a lot was still required to be done".

"Under the married accommodation project, nearly 1.99 lakh houses are to be built for forces. Out of that, 50 per cent has been completed," he said. On the rank pay issue of the forces, the Defence Minister said the Government has referred it to the Attorney General for his "final advise" on the matter.

DC-based RP Request

Hello there, I'm obviously new here, but I wanted to know if there was anyone who was a DC fan too. ^.^" Anyway, the fandoms I want to RP most are Justice League: Unlimited, Young Justice/YJ: Invasion, or just the DC universe in general. I'm more than willing to read up on any stories I'm not familiar with. I do have a few rules I want to get down though.

-I prefer to write in third person, it'd be nice if you would too.
-I like at least a paragraph per character you're writing for, but it can be shorter if there's a conversation going on or if they're really minor.
-I will not role play Boys Love or Girls Love.

-I require all my RP buddies to be able to play as a male and female, also I want both of us to control two characters and whatever other side character is needed at the moment. For example, I will control my main OC and your OC's love interest, and you'll have your main OC and my OC's love interest.

-Whenever any of our characters needs to talk to a side character, I prefer that the other temporarily take on the role of the side character so we can carry on a conversation. That way, no one needs to talk to themselves and there's always something to do. :)

-I like to discuss characters and plot before we make the RP thread, that is, after we get to know each other first and discuss what we're okay and not okay with. I also have a tendency to critique things or characters if I feel that they could be improved somehow. Please don't take offense to it, that's not my intention at all, and you're more than welcome to critique me too! :D I don't want my writing to suck or have a Mary Sue either.

Hopefully I don't seem intimidating, because I'm actually quite the pushover for stuff. So, any questions? :3

EDIT: I'm so sorry, I forgot to mention that I'm only looking for 1x1 role plays of this. I will accept multiple RP buddies too!

American Federation of Musicians' President Ray Hair Re-Elected

AFM president Ray Hair was re-elected by acclamation at the union?s Las Vegas convention, the organization announced Thursday. Hair has served as President of the AFM since August 2010. He has been a professional musician since 1964, performing as a freelance, club-date, recording and traveling musician. Previously the President of AFM Local 72-147 for more than 27 years, he was first elected to the AFM?s international executive board in 1989.

In addition, all members of the International Executive Board were re-elected: vice president Bruce Fife, Local 99 (Portland, Ore.); secretary-treasurer Sam Folio, Local 368 (Reno, Nev.); vice president from Canada Alan Willaert, Local 149 (Toronto); Tino Gagliardi, Local 802 (New York); Tina Morrison, Local 105 (Spokane, Wash.); Joe Parente, Local 77 (Philadelphia, Pa.); Dave Pomeroy, Local 257 (Nashville, Tenn.); Vince Trombetta, Local 47 (Los Angeles).? Also, John Acosta (Local 47) was elected to serve as the AFM delegate to the AFL-CIO Convention.

?I am honored to have been re-elected AFM International President,? said Hair. ?These are exciting and challenging times for professional musicians. Our message of unity has resonated with the delegates. We will look inward to harness the energy of our Executive Board and local officers to build a unity of purpose and a spirit of service for our members and for professional musicians everywhere.?

A presentation by the international executive board and directors, on the need for a proposed increase in per-capita dues increase, ?won over many skeptical convention delegates,? the union said in a statement. The new financial package will raise approximately $1.2 million annually, and will be used to bolster organizing and contract enforcement efforts, as well as augmenting services to Local officers and musicians.

Additionally, the delegates to the convention donated $60,200 to Local 30-73 for their support of the musicians of the Minnesota Orchestra and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. In addition to the loss of work dues from two lost seasons, the Local has incurred what the AFM called ?crippling? legal bills in negotiating for both orchestras during two lock-outs.

Pakistan bans condom commercial for being too racy

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? Pakistan's media regulatory agency has banned a condom commercial starring a sultry Pakistani model after it received hundreds of complaints the ad was too racy, a senior official said Thursday.

The 50-second television commercial shows a Pakistani couple wondering why their neighbor's new bride, the model and actress Mathira Mohammed playing herself, is working so hard to keep her husband happy. When asked about his secret, the neighbor smiles and holds up a pack of condoms made by Josh, which means excitement in Urdu.

"Bring Josh into your life," the neighbor says, just before explosions flash behind boxes of condoms on the screen.

Pakistan's media regulatory agency banned the commercial Tuesday after reviewing it and determining that it violated the group's code of conduct, said Mohammad Saleem, a senior regulatory official.

"We don't take any arbitrary decisions," Saleem said.

Though mentioning strawberry-flavored condoms, the ad otherwise isn't racy by Western standards. A conservatively dressed Mohammed greets her new husband's mother, feeds him by hand and knocks on the neighbor's door to get ice for a cold drink.

Josh is a subsidiary of DKT International, a nonprofit organization founded to promote family planning and HIV/AIDS prevention through social marketing, according to Josh's Facebook page.

DKT, which is funded by both the United States and Britain, has been working in Pakistan since 2012 in attempt to help women meet their needs for contraception, the group says on its website. A telephone number listed for the group rang unanswered Thursday.

Pakistan has the sixth largest population of any country in the world with roughly 180 million people. If the current rate of growth continues, the population will double by 2050, DKT says.

Pakistan's rapid population growth has strained the country's health and education systems, and its faltering economy has not been able to provide jobs for millions of people entering the work force.

One of the things holding back contraceptive use in Pakistan has been the conservative norms of the majority Muslim country. Some Pakistanis complain that the country is growing even more conservative as hard-line versions of Islam gain greater influence.

Kim Jong Un visits war graves ahead of North Korea's 'Day of Victory'

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un (right) salutes during a ceremony in Pyongyang on Thursday. His aunt, Kim Kyong Hui (left), also made her first public appearance since May.

PYONGYANG, North Korea -- North Korean leader Kim Jong Un presided over a commemoration at a war cemetery Thursday as the country prepared to mark the 60th anniversary of what is sees as its victory in the Korean War with defiance.

Kim, the grandson of North Korea's founding father who launched the Korean War, Kim Il Sung, did not speak at the ceremony but members of the large crowd who attended poured scorn on their foes, including the United States.

David Guttenfelder / AP

Korean War veterans visit a cemetery on Thursday.

"The survivors of the war heroes here can beat the Americans to death on our own," said Kim Bu Ok, who fell to her knees in tears when she approached her father's grave.

"We can crush those bastards no matter how hard they try, and I want the world to know this. As soon as those Americans even stick up their heads, we'll stomp them to dust."

North Korea has been staging nationalistic tributes to its "Eternal President", the late Kim Il Sung, ahead of the anniversary on Saturday of the armistice that ended the 1950-53 war.

North Korea calls July 27 its "Day of Victory in the Great Fatherland Liberation War." It blames the U.S. military presence in the South for confrontation on the peninsula.

Kim Jong Un, who leads the North as first secretary of the Workers' Party, was welcomed at the ceremony with cheers from thousands of people, many of them family members of those buried at the cemetery on the outskirts of Pyongyang.

Banners were strung up with slogans such as "Glory to the warrior heroes who did their part in the liberation of the homeland."

/

As chief Asia photographer for the Associated Press, David Guttenfelder has had unprecedented access to communist North Korea. Here's a rare look at daily life in the secretive country.

Kim was accompanied by North Korea's power couple: his aunt, Kim Kyong Hui, the 67-year-old daughter of the founding leader, and her husband, Jang Song Thaek, widely considered the second most powerful man in the North and the political mentor to the youthful leader.

It was Kim's aunt's first public appearance since May. Her absence had fueled speculation in South Korean media that she may be ill, which could have serious implications for Kim Jong Un's grip on power.

Under a sunny sky and in sweltering heat, Kim led a ribbon-cutting ceremony and paid his respects to the dead.

North Korea has used the anniversary to underscore its defiance of U.N. sanctions, imposed for its nuclear and missile tests, and its resolve in light of a perception of chilling ties with its sole major ally, China.

Despite Chinese frustration with North Korea's threats this year of nuclear war against the United States and South Korea, China is sending its vice president to the armistice anniversary in Pyongyang.

Samsung puts the new Exynos 5 Octa 5420 SoC up against a Nexus 10 at SIGGRAPH 2013 handson video

In case you were already snoozin' when Samsung made its announcement late yesterday, the company is here at SIGGRAPH 2013 eager to show off the muscle behind its new chip. Before the exhibitions start officially, we had a chance to nab a look at a reference tablet running the Exynos 5 Octa 5420 SoC alongside ARM's Mali T-628 silicon packing six cores. For comparison purposes, the prototype unit was matched against a Nexus 10 tablet and its 1.7GHz Exynos 5 Dual 5250. Our first impression? The 5420 ran GLBenchmark's 2.7.0 T-Rex on-screen test noticeably (read: a lot) smoother than the Nexus 10 and the final scores confirmed the performance boost that we previously reported. We also had a look at both the Unreal Engine's Citadel (up to 45fps at times) and Unity Chase on the test device with both further demonstrating silky smooth transitions and brisk graphic renders. There's no word on when the chip will make it into your next mobile device, but it is scheduled to go into production next month. For a quick look at the two tablets side by side, we'll refer you to the video embedded just beyond the break.

AP Source: Denver's Miller faces 4-game suspension

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) ? A person with knowledge of the situation says Pro Bowl linebacker Von Miller will miss the first month of the season for violating the NFL's drug policy, pending an appeal.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the league hasn't announced any punishment.

ESPN first reported the pending discipline of Miller, who didn't answer calls to his cellphone Monday from The Associated Press.

The league has a confidentiality clause on such cases. Broncos spokesman Patrick Smyth said the team is unable to provide any comment.

Miller was the league's Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2012 with 11? sacks and he topped that last season with a franchise-record 18? sacks while making it to his second straight Pro Bowl.

Bomb during sermon by radical Myanmar monk wounds five

YANGON (Reuters) - A bomb exploded meters away from a radical Buddhist monk as he delivered a mass sermon in Myanmar, police said on Monday, the latest flare-up as inter-religious tensions simmer.

Five people were slightly wounded in the incident late on Sunday in Myanmar's second city, Mandalay.

Wirathu, the prominent monk who heads a movement accused of stirring violence against minority Muslims, said he believed the blast was intended to silence him.

The home-made bomb went off inside a parked car, according to police and witnesses. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Tensions have been smouldering between radical elements of Myanmar's Buddhist majority and its minority Muslims. Bouts of religious violence have killed at least 237 people and displaced 150,000 in the past year, testing the resolve of a two-year-old quasi-civilian government.

The device exploded during a ceremony conducted by Wirathu, who once called himself "the Burmese bin Laden". He is the chief proponent of a movement known as 969, which reformist President Thein Sein's office has described as a "symbol of peace".

Wirathu was unharmed, despite being just 40 feet from the blast, according to police.

Reuters investigations in two of the hotspots of unrest - Rakhine state and the central city of Meikhtila - have revealed the violence was started on both occasions by Buddhist mobs led by monks.

A novice monk was among those who received minor injuries in Sunday's blast.

"We can say it was a small hand-made bomb that caused the explosion. We are not in a position to reveal any more information at the moment since investigation is ongoing," a Mandalay police officer told Reuters by telephone, requesting anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

DEATH THREAT RECEIVED

Sources close to Wirathu could not be immediately reached for comment.

However, the monk told Radio Free Asia's Burmese service that he had previously received a sound recording containing a threat to his life, which he believed was the voice of a Muslim cleric.

The bomb, he said, was intended to silence him.

"I've no idea who exactly carried out this explosion. But it must have been done by those who usually carry out terrorist acts," he told Radio Free Asia.

"The motive could be to shut my mouth."

A witness said security had since been stepped up in Mandalay. Even prior to the explosion, security had been tight during Buddhist events held in the past week in the commercial capital, Yangon.

The explosion took place on the fifth and final day of mass sermons held by Wirathu. The president's office, which insists it wants to foster peace, tolerance and unity in ethnically diverse Myanmar, has described Wirathu as "a son of Lord Buddha". Buddhists make up about 90 percent of the estimated 60 million population.

The 969 movement has been accused of stirring anti-Muslim sentiment in a deeply Buddhist nation, where curbs on freedom of speech and assembly have eased since the end of military rule two years ago.

A Reuters investigation last month showed 969 monks were providing a moral justification for a wave of anti-Muslim bloodshed that could derail Myanmar's nascent reforms.

Government officials were unavailable for comment about Sunday's explosion. (Reporting by a Reuters reporter; Writing by Martin Petty; Editing by Ron Popeski)

New Samsung Galaxy Note III Images Leak, We Get A Better Look This Time

Samsung Galaxy Note II SPEN2b-580-100

Rumors continue to circulate about the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note III. The replacement for Samsung?s popular Galaxy Note II is expected to be bigger and better than ever.

The Samsung Galaxy Note III has shown up in blurry photos before. At least, the device in these photos is claimed to be the Galaxy Note III. One of the sources of the original leaked photos, @techkiddy, has returned with a few more images, stating they are from a Samsung Testing center. These shots are still blurry and still don?t show us much of anything. All we can really see is a large, rectangular device with squared-off corners. There?s nothing to really show us that this is the Samsung Galaxy Note III.

Samsung_Galaxy_Note_III_Blurrycam_Leak_04 (1)

The latest rumors surrounding the Galaxy Note III have the device coming to market with three different screen options. We?re not sure why this would happen, so take the information with a grain of salt. The device is rumored to have a 5.7 inch, 1080 x 1920 Full HD screen. A premium version of the phone will have a flexible OLED display. The version heading to Asian markets will have a Super AMOLED FHD display, and there will be a LCD Full HD display on the European variant. Again, we?re not sure this makes sense, but it?s what we?re hearing.

Samsung_Galaxy_Note_III_Blurrycam_Leak_05

Under the hood, we?ll have two different processors for the Galaxy Note III. The Asian variant will be powered by an Exynos 5420 SoC while the International version will run on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core chip. The Snapdragon version is said to be clocked at 2.3 GHz.

The rumored specs for the device are as follows:

  • 5.7 inch Full HD display
  • 2.3 Ghz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 in the international model
  • Exynos 5420 SoC in the version for Asian markets
  • 13 megapixel rear-facing camera with anti-shake feature
  • 3 GB of RAM
  • Wi-Fi 802.11ac
  • LTE connectivity
  • S Pen support
  • Android 4.3

That?s all we know for now. Samsung is holding an Unpacked Event on September 4th, just before IFA Berlin kicks off. We are expecting the Galaxy Note III to be announced then, with a release date to follow. What do you think? Are these images real? Are you going to pick up a Galaxy Note III this fall? Let us know in the comments.
