Crippling a protein that allows cancer cells to grow when oxygen is scarce causes tumors to regress, according to a study published online on January 23 in the Journal of Experimental Medicine (http://www.jem.org).

An enzyme called PKM2 (M2 isoform of pyruvate kinase) is ramped up in cancer cells, allowing them to generate energy in the harsh, low-oxygen environment found within tumors. Michael Goldberg and Phillip Sharp at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology now find that inhibiting PKM2 kills cancer cells by starving them of energy but leaves normal cells unscathed. Crippling PKM2 caused established tumors in mice to melt away. If these results hold true in humans, this strategy could prove effective against a wide spectrum of cancers with minimal side effects.

Chef Paula Deen hid diabetes, pushed high-fat food (AP)

NEW YORK ? Paula Deen, the Southern belle of butter and heavy cream, makes no apologies for waiting three years to disclose she has diabetes while continuing to dish up deep-fried cheesecake and other high-calorie, high-fat recipes on TV.

She said she isn't changing the comfort cooking that made her a star, though it isn't clear how much of it she'll continue to eat while she promotes health-conscious recipes along with a diabetes drug she's endorsing for a Danish company.

"I've always said, `Practice moderation, y'all.' I'll probably say that a little louder now," Deen said Tuesday after revealing her diagnosis on NBC's "Today" show. "You can have diabetes and have a piece of cake. You cannot have diabetes and eat a whole cake."

Health activists and one fellow chef called her a hypocrite for promoting an unhealthy diet along with a drug to treat its likely effects. Deen added her support of the Novo Nordisk company to a collection of lucrative endorsements that include Smithfield ham and Philadelphia Cream Cheese.

Deen, who will turn 65 on Thursday, said she kept her diagnosis private as she and her family figured out what to do, presumably about her health and a career built solidly on Southern cooking. Among her recipes: deep-fried cheesecake covered in chocolate and powdered sugar, and a quiche that calls for a pound of bacon.

"I really sat on this information for a few years because I said, `Oh, my gosh, what am I going to do about this? Is my life fixing to change? Am I no longer going to like my life?" she asked. "I had to have time to adjust and soak it all in and get up all the information that I could."

While Deen, who lives in Savannah, Ga., has cut out the sweet tea she routinely drank straight through to bedtime and taken up treadmill walking, she plans few changes on the air.

Government doctors say that being overweight (as Deen is), over 45 (as Deen is) and inactive (as Deen was) increase the risk for developing Type 2 diabetes. Growth of the disease in the U.S. has been closely tied to escalating obesity rates. Roughly 23 million Americans are believed to have the most common Type 2 diabetes; patients' bodies either do not produce enough insulin or do not use it efficiently, allowing excess sugar, or glucose, to accumulate in the blood.

Deen is the pitch person for Novo Nordisk's new online program, Diabetes in a New Light, which offers tips on food preparation, stress management and working with doctors on treatment. She has contributed diabetes-friendly recipes to the website and takes the company's drug Victoza, a once-daily noninsulin injection that had global sales of $734 million in the first nine months of 2011.

A recipe for Lady and Sons Lasagna, on her diabetes-conscious site, uses extra-lean ground beef and cans of unsalted tomato sauce and diced tomatoes, for a dish estimated at 260 calories a serving. Turn to Deen's collection of recipes on The Food Network's site and find Grandmother Paul's fried chicken, with Crisco shortening for frying, or baked French Toast casserole, with two cups of half-and-half and a half-pound of butter. No calorie counts are estimated.

The Novo Nordisk site links to promotional materials for the drug Victoza. Company spokeswoman Ambre Morley and Deen declined to disclose how much she is being paid.

Deen said she had no help or advice to offer the public when she was first diagnosed, but feels she's making a contribution now.

None of that matters much to outspoken chef Anthony Bourdain, who has never been a Deen fan. He told Eater.com of her diabetes announcement: "When your signature dish is hamburger in between a doughnut, and you've been cheerfully selling this stuff knowing all along that you've got Type 2 diabetes ... it's in bad taste if nothing else."

In Yuba, Wis., Judd Dvorak watches Deen cook on TV all the time with his wife. He thinks Bourdain has the right idea. Dvorak said it's wrong for Deen to accept money to become a paid spokeswoman for a diabetes drug after espousing a cooking style that helps lead to diabetes.

"It would be like someone who goes on TV and brags about how wonderful it is to smoke two packs of cigarettes a day and then when he or she gets lung cancer becomes a paid spokesperson for nicotine patches," Dvorak said. "I feel it is in very poor taste and if she chose to become an unpaid spokesperson for the American Diabetes Association, that would be a better way for her to make a difference and help fight this horrible disease."

Deen also smokes, but she considers her heavy-handed food only one piece of the diabetes puzzle, with genetics, lifestyle, stress, age and race. She said she would never advocate smoking and her diabetes is "well under control."

While making changes in her personal life, she doesn't think her TV shows ? there are three ? will look much different. She spends about 30 days a year taping, "so I'm not cooking and eating that way every day."

That's something the public doesn't necessarily know. The food, Deen said, isn't really to blame.

"I am who I am," she said. "I think the South gets a bad rap sometimes, saying our food is very unhealthy, but frankly I don't think that's the case. I think it's like any other food, whether it be Italian, French, Cajun. They all can be very high in calories and that's where we have to practice portion control and moderation."

Morley said the company didn't know Deen had diabetes when it approached her about promoting the new health initiative.

"We really just wanted to ask her, `Hey, Paula, do you think we could challenge you to change up some of your recipes and make them diabetes-friendly," Morley said. "And her reply was, `How did you guys know I had diabetes?'"

It was a surprise to the Food Network as well. Network officials found out only last week, said spokesman Jesse Derris.

"As part of the Food Network's family, our only concern is for Paula's health. We will continue to support her as she confronts this new challenge, taking her lead on what future episodes will offer her fans," he said.

Some health experts question the delay between the time Deen was diagnosed with diabetes and her move three years later to promote a healthier way of cooking and living.

"A more responsible approach would have been that once she was diagnosed with diabetes to really emphasize to her viewers the importance of eating a healthy diet," said Michael Jacobson, executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest.

Afghan official: 3 killed in helicopter crash (AP)

KABUL, Afghanistan ? An Afghan official says a civilian helicopter has crashed in southern Afghanistan, killing all three people on board.

Marjan Haqmal, police chief of Nad Ali district in Helmand province, says the Russian-made aircraft probably went down because of a technical malfunction.

NATO confirmed that a civilian helicopter crashed in southern Afghanistan on Monday. It said the site of the crash has been secured and that coalition forces are trying to gather more information about what happened.

NATO did not provide information about casualties.

Dozens of Russian-built cargo helicopters are used by contractors working for the NATO-led coalition.

The coalition relies heavily on helicopters to avoid using roads that are frequently mined by the insurgents.

Foley clarified that his goal was to be in the Royal Rumble Match to win it. After more harsh words for the WWE Legend, Ziggler told Foley to ?just go away.?

Next, Ziggler?s Royal Rumble opponent, WWE Champion CM Punk, came out to greet his fellow ?unconventional? Superstar, pointing out that neither hide behind a woman. The WWE Champion also called Ziggler out for having the Interim Raw GM in his back pocket for their match at Royal Rumble.

As tensions grew in the ring, Interim Raw GM Laurinaitis emerged and said although he considered Foley?s request to be in the Royal Rumble Match, his answer was ?no?! After the blunt answer, Vickie cackled in Foley?s face.

Modern Day Witch Hunter idea

For some time now I have been infatuated with the idea of witch hunters (primarily the interest grew from an old character of mine from the Elder Scrolls: Oblivion and just became my own little brainchild) and I thought to myself "Self: wouldn't it be interesting to see what a group of modern day hunters would be like?" and thus this idea was brought to life.

The concept of the game would revolve around rooting out the evils that have been making themselves known in the modern world: vampires, werewolves, cults dedicated to summoning evil gods and whatnot... basically anything evil needs to be eliminated before they become a threat. Characters would not start off knowing each other and would be brought together for a common goal in eradicating the monsters that threaten to plague our world.

I would be using a lot of information from the D20 Modern books such as classes, races, etc and characters would be free to model their characters any way they feel like.

I am still debating on playstyle however, wondering if I should have character sheets of the players (written ones) and keep track of their skills and the like and make DM rolls during larger or more integrated moments of the campaign.

Please let me know if this interests anyone and what concerns you may or may not have.

Thanks in advance!

Brain glia cells increase their DNA content to preserve vital blood-brain barrier

ScienceDaily (Jan. 13, 2012) ? The blood-brain barrier is essential for maintaining the brain's stable environment -- preventing entry of harmful viruses and bacteria and isolating the brain's specific hormonal and neurotransmitter activity from that in the rest of the body.

In addition to nerve cells, the brain contains glia cells that support and protect the neurons. In the fruit fly, the blood-brain boundary is made by glia joined into an envelope sealed around the nerve cells. As the brain rapidly expands during development, the glial envelope must grow correspondingly to remain intact. However, little has been known about how the blood-brain barrier maintains its integrity as the brain it protects develops.

Now Whitehead Institute scientists report that as the developing larval fruit fly brain grows by cell division, it instructs subperineurial glia (SPG) cells that form the blood-brain barrier to enlarge by creating multiple copies of their genomes in a process known as polyploidization. The researchers report their work this month in the journal Genes and Development.

"We think that this may be the same developmental strategy that's used in other contexts, where you need an outer layer of cells to maintain a seal, yet you also need the organ to grow during development," says Whitehead Member Terry Orr-Weaver.

Like the larval fruit fly's blood-brain barrier, cell layers in the human placenta and skin may employ polyploidization to respond to the need to expand while maintaining a sound boundary between the fetus and its surroundings, and the body and the outside world, respectively.

For preserving such barriers, polyploidy is ideal, as the cells forming the boundary enlarge without undergoing full cell division, a process that would break the tight junctions between cells.

In the larval fruit fly, polyploid SPG are necessary for maintaining the blood-brain barrier. When Yingdee Unhavaithaya, a postdoctoral researcher in Orr-Weaver's lab and first author of the Genes and Development article, prevented the SPG from making additional genome copies and becoming polyploid, the blood-brain barrier shattered as the brain continued to expand and the SPG was unable to accommodate its growth.

When allowed to progress naturally, polyploidy is flexible enough to accommodate even unusual brain expansion. After Unhavaithaya enlarged the brain by inducing a brain tumor, the SPG responded by increasing their ploidy and the blood-brain barrier remained unbroken.

This experiment also indicates that somehow the expanding brain mass is telling the SPG to increase their ploidy, but only as much as necessary to maintain the tight junctions between the SPG.

"It's a glimpse of communication between tissues during organogenesis," says Unhavaithaya. "We see different tissues trying to make a properly sized organ together. And one of the ways is by receiving instruction from the growing tissue so the other tissue can scale its size to properly conform to this tissue ratio for the organism."

For Orr-Weaver, Unhavaithaya's work could lead to additional exciting research.

"It has really opened up a whole new area to look at, so we can understand the mechanistic basis by which this communication happens," says Orr-Weaver, who is also an American Cancer Society professor of biology at MIT. "Does it happen at the organ level, or does it happen locally? There's really a lot to sort out."

This work was supported the Harold and Leila Mathers Charitable Foundation and the American Cancer Society.

Haiti marks two years after catastrophic quake (Reuters)

PORT-AU-PRINCE (Reuters) ? Haitians marked the second anniversary on Thursday of a devastating earthquake that ravaged their impoverished Caribbean country as their president held out new promises to rebuild the shattered land.

Many women donned white dresses as they observed a national day of mourning by attending church services across the deeply religious country.

They also held solemn ceremonies at mass grave sites to remember the dead from one of the world's worst-ever natural disaster.

The 7.0 magnitude quake on January 12, 2010, lasted only 10 to 20 seconds but toppled buildings and homes like cards and killed roughly 300,000 people and left more than 1.5 million homeless.

President Michel Martelly has vowed to redouble government efforts to help people rebuild their lives and reverse a painfully slow recovery marked by squalid tent camps home to more than a half a million people in the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince.

"This year is a year when we will really start rebuilding physically but also rebuilding the hope and the future of the Haitian people," the shaven-headed former Carnival music star known as "Sweet Micky" said on Wednesday.

Martelly, a political novice who took office last year, also announced new efforts backed by the Canadian government to relocate some 20,000 people from tent encampments only blocks from the still crumpled presidential palace.

Canada said it was contributing $20 million to the relocation effort.

In one of the main events of Thursday's remembrance, Martelly and former U.S. President Bill Clinton, who has promoted job creation as key to efforts to lift Haiti out of decades of misery and corruption, were to lay wreaths at a mass burial ground on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince.

Despite billions of dollars of international donations and aid pledges, many Haitians say they see few tangible results of the recovery and reconstruction effort.

Just over half of the piles of concrete, steel and other debris littering Port-au-Prince and its surrounding areas has been cleared.

Haitians also complain about a lack of housing and jobs two years after the quake.

"My hope is we will do everything we can to honor the memory of those who died by transforming the disaster into an opportunity to provide a better future for Haitians," said Junot Mura, a 23-year-old Port-au-Prince resident who said the quake took the life of his father.

Government officials point to post-quake projects like a $257 million industrial park being built on Haiti's northwest coast and a program to stimulate agriculture production as evidence some progress is being made.

But for some Haitians, at least, promises of a better future ring hollow after two years of painfully slow reconstruction efforts in the poorest country in the Americas.

"I stopped living after the quake," said Dieuline Mesidor, a 39-year-old mother who spoke outside the damaged Sacre-Coeur church in the capital.

She said she lost two children, a son and a daughter, in the earthquake.

"I've lost all interest in life," she said.

Should there be national standards for sex ed? (The Week)

New York ? An education and health coalition has proposed nationwide guidelines on what and when kids as young as second graders should know about sex

What, when, and how should kids learn about sex? The answers to those questions vary greatly from family to family and school to school across the country. But, a coalition of teachers, sexuality educators, public health advocates, and medical experts says it's time to set some standards when it comes to sex ed. Here, a brief guide:

What are these educators proposing?
A group of sexuality education advocates and 40 experts in health education, sexuality education, public health, public policy, philanthropy, and advocacy have created what they are calling "The National Sexuality Education Standards: Core Content and Skills, K-12." Their purpose, says the National Education Association Health Information Network's Executive Director, Jerry Newberry, is to provide educators with a guide to "the minimum they need to teach to set students on a path to sexual health and responsible adulthood." And they say schools should begin the process in second grade.

?

What standards do they set?
For starters, they say second graders should know and be able to explain that all living beings reproduce, and know the correct terms for all body parts. Then, by the time a student finishes the fifth grade, he should understand how puberty readies the body for reproduction, have knowledge of how HIV can be transmitted, and know what constitutes sexual harassment and abuse. Eighth grade graduates should know about emergency contraception, understand the idea of gender roles, and have received some abstinence education. High school graduates should be capable of describing, step-by-step, how to use a condom.

What standards are currently in place?
None. On average, a students receives about 17 hours of sexual health education prior to college ? three hours in grade school, six in middle school, and eight in high school, according to the Centers for Disease Control. "There is not, and probably never will be, a real national sexual education policy (unless you count our years of financing only abstinence-based programs)," says K.J. Dell'Antonia in The New York Times. The real purpose of this proposal is to spur discussion as to what kids should know about sex at different age levels.

Is the idea proving controversial?
Not surprisingly, yes. The executive director of the National Abstinence Education Association, Valerie Huber, doesn't think such standards should be in place. "Controversial topics are best reserved for conversations between parent and child, not in the classroom," she says. I disagree, says Dell'Antonia. "I'm unconvinced by some of [the] hard lines" in this proposal, but the U.S. has one of the highest rates of teen pregnancy in the industrialized world, so "I want sex education in the classroom, and plenty of it." It's important to start early with age-appropriate guidelines like these, says Cora Collette Breuner, a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics committee on adolescence. "Kids have already formulated their own opinions and biases by the time they're in middle and high school," she says. At that point, "it's too late" to start talking about this stuff.

Prices fall on Ediwin, Kuroda, Oswalt

The top three starting pitchers left on the free agent market are finding it tough going. ?And Buster Olney reports that Edwin Jackson, Hiroki Kuroda and Roy Oswalt have all lowered their asking price:

The asking prices have come down significantly for veteran FA starters: Oswalt (said to be at $8m), Kuroda (10-11m), Edwin Jackson.

I am finding it rather hard to believe that someone ? hello Yankees! ? wouldn?t jump at either Oswalt or Kuroda on a one-year deal at those rates. But I suppose teams realize that these three are basically killing each other on the market, and so long as no one is getting serious attention from another team, they?re content to wait it out.

Competition is rough out there kids.

Lenovo Gets a Jump on Apple in Smart TVs

Lenovo on Sunday announced its first smart TV that will recognize voice commands and run Android 4.0 applications, getting a jump over Apple's rumored pursuit of TVs with advanced features.

The K91 Smart TV will provide classic TV functionality, but also include voice control and console-quality gaming capabilities, said Nick Reynolds, director at Lenovo. Users will be able to operate TVs through voice commands instead of the traditional way of using buttons on remote controls.

"This allows the user to tell the remote control what they want to do, such as accessing thousands of TV apps available running on Android 4.0, or accessing LenovoCloud service to download new upgrades, and also access personal multimedia content or interact on social networks," Reynolds said.

This could give Lenovo am edge over Apple, which is rumored to be pursuing the TV market with a television set. Speculation of Apple's introduction of a TV gained ground after rumors emerged from the biography of former CEO Steve Jobs that Apple was tinkering with the idea of creating an easy-to-use integrated TV set that could sync with other devices and Apple's iCloud service. Analysts have mostly backed the idea of Apple's imminent launch of a TV set, but some analysts have doubts. Apple already offers the Apple TV set-top box to stream movies and other content.

Lenovo's new TV set, which has flicker-free 3D capability, will be shown at this week's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Companies such as Samsung and LG have also been peddling smart TVs that can run applications like games and connect to movie streaming services like Netflix. But Lenovo wants to differentiate itself with Android 4.0, natural language processing and speech recognition technology.

"As a new player in the highly competitive TV market, it is very important for Lenovo to offer significant differentiation right from the off. So the K91 is designed as a premium product," Reynolds said on a conference call.

The TV set will initially launch at the end of the first quarter in China, a home market where Lenovo launches many of its first products such as laptops, tablets and smartphones.

"This is a new segment for us and we will continue to look at international opportunities for expansion," Reynolds said.

The TV set will be an IPS panel with 42-inch and 55-inch 3D LED displays. It will have SRS TruSurround capabilities and a 5-megapixel camera for videoconferencing and parental control features.

It will run on a Qualcomm 8060 dual-core CPU running at 1.5GHZ with a power integrated GPU, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage. Lenovo envisions the TV as being the center of home entertainment with the ability to connect and exchange data with smartphones and tablets, though Lenovo did not provide further details.

Lenovo is also introducing the A30 Internet TV set top box, which provides access to TV content and cloud-based games, karaoke and other content services. The box is powered by a Via Nano processor running at 1.2GHz, and is compatible with multiple video and audio formats.

Sprint is getting the Samsung Galaxy Nexus later this year

1. Darnelll posted on 1 hour ago 3 0

I am on Sprint and I feel like Sprint continuously is always 2 steps behind the competition. We are always lacking when it comes to selections of phones and when we do get a flagship phone its almost so late that other carriers are about to unveil their next gen phones. Sprints plans are cheap and they have good customer service, but their poor phone selection and late phone launches are becoming increasingly frustrating. Come on Dan Hesse, throw us a bone and get something great like the original HTC EVO again.

2. glf752 posted on 1 hour ago 0 0

@Darnelll....Sprint will have exclusive rights to the Iphone 5....right now they are more worried getting up the new network. plus the only phone manufact... that doesn't have a big contract with verizon or AT&T is HTC and Samsung so therefore it's hard for sprint to get just a lot of great phones

3. hjd77 posted on 1 hour ago 0 0

how do u figure sprint has any exclusive rights to the ip5???????

4. PhoneCritic posted on 1 hour ago 0 0

I am speculating ( no real evidence behined it ) but Dan Can't Make those premium type of Android phone investments as quick as he would like to due to the incredible burden of carrying the iPhone 4S.

Sprint bet the farm on this phone so they must try to sell as much of them as possible to make a small profit. I belive Sprint will find out that they really did not need the iPhone at this point in time and it may cause them more harm then good. Due to the enormous cost of deploying an LTE network.

If I am not mistaken Sprint paid 12 billion to (Apple) aquire the rights to sell the Iphone? That is huge chunk of cash that could have been better used to upgrade their network to LTE standards. But when you are in business these are the big decisions you have to make. (Hopfully the whole Lightsquare and Clearwire issues work themselves out as they are another financal strain on Sprint.)

5. theBankRobber posted on 59 min ago 1 0

Sprints user base is half of Verizon and AT&T's, thats why Sprint is always late getting good phones or missing out on good phones. Im really happy with my Photon 4G and plan to keep it until my 20 months pass by for my next upgrade. To many phones every year anyway to try to keep up. Its getting expensive to keep up. So, i find it best to do some research, pick a phone and just stick with it. :)

7. Cwebb posted on 38 min ago 0 0

I am hopefully doing the same with my launch day Evo 3d, but whoever gets a 4G network into my medium-sized town first will have me for 2 years

6. threeline posted on 44 min ago 0 0

Sprint, how about releasing the Galaxy Nexus now? You released the Evo 4G before your 4G networks were fully up and running. I am ready to upgrade but I want the GN.

8. The_Miz posted on 23 min ago 1 1

You're not missing much. It's just a repackaged Galaxy S2 phone with poor build. Course, that holds true for all Samsung phones.

10. bucky posted on 6 min ago 0 0

Have had my international sgs2 for about 8 months and not a single issue. Cant say the same for my htc devices with that "high quality" soft touch crap that scrapes off immediately after a slight fall. Or the atrix which would creak as loud as a door everytime I hit the power button. Or the iphone made of glass. the "cheap plastic" argument no longer applies...

9. The_Miz posted on 22 min ago 1 0

I was expecting some good news, but then I saw this and was let down. Sprint deserves a better LTE phone, not that there's any good LTE Android phones to begin with. But the GN, after all the problems it had lol?

11. tigermcm posted on 5 min ago 0 0

this must be the '12 "evo" because later this year with lte support coming mid yr sounds like a june release to me

2 more dead birds in HK test positive for H5N1

(AP) ? Hong Kong authorities say two more dead birds have tested positive for a dangerous strain of bird flu, adding to health worries in the city.

Agriculture officials said Friday that two black-headed gulls found separately about a week ago in rural areas had H5N1 avian influenza. The birds are common visitors in winter.

Last month, a Chinese bus driver who tested positive for H5N1 died in a city bordering Hong Kong. Also, workers in Hong Kong slaughtered nearly 20,000 birds at a market after two dead birds, one a chicken, were found to have the dangerous strain.

H5N1 rarely infects humans and usually only those who come into close contact with diseased poultry. The World Health Organization says globally there have been 336 human deaths from 573 confirmed bird flu cases since 2003.

Albuquerque Celebrates New Mexico?s Centennial

New Mexico?s second century of statehood began with the loud sound of vehicle horns and locomotive whistles in downtown Albuquerque Friday.

The loud noise followed Mayor Richard Berry?s proclamation at 11:35a.m., the precise moment President William H. Taft signed the proclamation making New Mexico the 47th state of the United States of American in 1912.

??A hundred year ago, President Taft signed New Mexico into statehood with the words, ?I am glad to give you life and I trust that you will be healthy?,? said Mayor Richard J. Berry.

The event was organized by the ABQ Ride, who also used the event to celebrate the legacy of the legacy of the old Alvarado Hotel.

PFT: Bengals' Dalton returns to practice

Lions quarterback Stafford congratulates Saints quarterback Brees after the Saints beat the Lions in their NFL football game in New OrleansReuters

With matching 10-6 records in Week 17, I finished the regular season seven games behind Rosenthal.

But there are still 11 games to go.? (Counting the Pro Bowl, there are 12.)

So I?m saying there?s a chance. . . .

For the regular season, Rosenthal is 169-87.? I?m 162-94.

Bengals at Texans

Florio?s take:? With neither team having any realistic shot at advancing beyond the division round, this one feels like a bowl game that, fortunately for the Texans, is being played on their home field.? The Texans have little playoff experience, but they get to play another team that doesn?t have much more.? With a flu bug possibly snaking through the Cincinnati locker room, there?s a chance that Bengals fans will be feeling nauseous by Saturday night.

Florio?s pick:? Texans 23, Bengals 17.

Rosenthal?s take: There?s a ?happy to be there? vibe to both of these teams. But only the Bengals are lucky to even make the playoffs. They can?t beat quality teams. Houston?s defense is more dangerous and more balanced. The Texans running game is superior too. Throw in one of the best home atmospheres in the league, and the Texans may win going away.

Rosenthal?s pick: Texans 23, Bengals 13.

Lions at Saints

Florio?s take:? Through the first eight games of the 2011 season, Calvin Johnson and Matthew Stafford repeatedly connected, with 11 touchdowns and 804 yards.? After the Lions? bye, teams spent more time blanketing Johnson.? When defenses took him away, Matthew Stafford had nowhere else to go ? especially without a running game.? Eventually, Stafford decided to throw it to Johnson even if Johnson wasn?t open.? In the last three games, Johnson and Stafford have connected for 530 yards and four scores.? The Saints beat the Lions by 14 points during the period when Stafford wasn?t throwing it to Johnson when Johnson appeared to be covered.? And so, partially under the influence of a desire to catch Rosenthal and partially under the influence of one or more potent beverages, I?ve got a feeling that the Lions will make the last three-pointer in the basketball game that will unfold on the floor of the Superdome.

Florio?s pick:? Lions 44, Saints 41.

Rosenthal?s take: This isn?t the matchup Detroit wanted. Matthew Stafford struggles against the blitz; the Saints love to blitz. You beat New Orleans by running; Detroit can?t run. The vaunted Detroit defensive line is no longer a difference maker. This is like an Arena League game for New Orleans? defense. Get three stops and they win.

Rosenthal?s pick: Saints 44, Lions 31.

Falcons at Giants

Florio?s take:? So Eli Manning once again is elite, even though Victor Cruz has saved Eli?s salsa with big catches ? and runs ? in the last two weeks.? And the Giants have some Super Bowl buzz, given the memories of what they accomplished back in 2007.? But these Giants have a bad habit of showing up only in huge moments, and there?s nothing about a wild-card visit from the Falcons that will make the Giants feel like they did in the past two games against the Jets and Cowboys.? If ? and it could be a big if ? the Falcons resist the urge to justify trading up for Julio Jones and/or to prove that Matt Ryan is a big-time quarterback and simply run the ball and run the ball and run the ball some more, they can get the Giants on their heels and infest MetLife Stadium with the same funk that existed when the Redskins, Seahawks, and Eagles won there.

Florio?s pick:? Falcons 24, Giants 21.

Rosenthal?s take: The Falcons traded up for Julio Jones to get more explosive on offense and they were more explosive down the stretch. The Giants defense is prone to giving up big plays. This just feels like a game the Falcons have been building towards for a few years. It?s their time. At least for one week.

Rosenthal?s pick: Falcons 24, Giants 21.

Steelers at Broncos

Florio?s take:? If Lions-Saints is destined to be a basketball game, a hockey match could be breaking out in Broncoland.? The Steelers are sluggish on the road, losing in Baltimore, Houston, and San Francisco, and barely winning in Indianapolis, Kansas City, and Cleveland.? But the Broncos aren?t the Ravens, Texans, or 49ers.? And the Steelers, despite any real or imagined or embellished injuries, will find a way to shut down the Denver running game, and in turn ensure that Air Tebow will be nothing more than a paper airplane.

Florio?s pick:? Steelers 13, Broncos 9.

Rosenthal?s take: If the Chiefs and Browns can keep things close against Pittsburgh, the Broncos can make this a game. When Tebow Time arrives, however, the Steelers defense seems more likely to score a touchdown than this dreadful Denver passing attack.

Rosenthal?s pick:? Steelers 16, Broncos 10.
