Cory White said he had a pretty cool experience returning to Iowa for work last year.

White, a seven-year veteran for Red Horse Racing in the NASCAR Camping World truck Series, was joined by friends and family, running into some old friends for the series? 2010 stop at Iowa Speedway.

This year might have a different feel as the 37-year-old Vinton native visits his old home after severe storms with high winds damaged much of the town Monday. He expected to drive to Vinton for a brief stop before a busy weekend at Iowa Speedway?for the?NCWTS Coca-Cola 200 presented by Hy-Vee on Saturday, beginning at 7 p.m. Practice was scheduled for Friday with qualifying Saturday afternoon.

White received a phone call from his parents, Duane and Janice White,?about the?effects of the storm. White was relieved to hear they weren?t injured, despite suffering damage. White, who?now calls North Carolina home, scoured websites reporting it.

?When you think about high winds, you figure a few trees down and maybe some shingles off the house,? White said. ?I got to looking on the Internet and realized this is pretty serious.

?It was pretty devastating.?

As the picture of the storm?s impact came into focus, White heard about an old friend who lost his house and almost everything. It reinforced his appreciation for his own blessings.

?Sometimes we take stuff for granted,? White said. ?When stuff like that happens to people we know sometimes you stop and sit back and realize you have things pretty good.?

White?s career has an RHR pit crew member has been more good than bad. He currently serves as a tire carrier for Timothy Peters, who sits in seventh in the NCWTS points standings, trailing leader Johnny Sauter by only 39 points. White said he has had opportunities to move up but declined to stay with RHR.

?Our organization is very family-oriented,? said White, noting he enjoys working for the organization. ?They always treat you right in certain circumstances that might come up. You always get treated fairly and that?s all you can ever ask for.?

The family atmosphere surrounding RHR has helped foster a racing bond with the older of two sons, Tyler, 6, who has come to work with his dad at work occasionally. Tyler has interest in what has dad does, even if it might be secondary right now.

?My wife says he?ll sit down and watch the races,? White said. ?He?s more into karate.?

?He has mentioned to me about how he?d like to change tires.?

White got his start working for friends who drove at local tracks, including Benton County Speedway in Vinton, Independence Motor Speedway and Fayette County Speedway in West Union. His dad, who raced late models at those tracks and even at Hawkeye Downs Speedway when it was still a dirt track, had a friend that was touring. White hooked on and was offered a job immediately. He has carved a niche in NASCAR, but he reminisces about the early days.

?Every now and then I?ll get out the old newspapers and magazines,? White said. ?I?ve got stuff from back in the days and look at it. It brings back some good memories.?

The season has had its share of setbacks, despite Peters claiming one pole start and three top-10 finishes, including two in the top five, in 10 starts. White is encouraged by the fact the team hasn?t put everything together and are still in striking distance. A strong run in his home state could propel them to the top.

?We?ve had a season that?s been more down than up,? White said. ?We?ve had a lot of misfortune.

?It?s reassuring that we?re not running all that good and everyone is disappointed but we?re still right there in the chase.?
