In the end, the vote on the Manchin-Toomey compromise to increase background checks for gun sales wasn't that close. With a 54-46 vote late Wednesday afternoon, the Senate failed to end a Republican-led filibuster of the proposal, prompting a visitor in the gallery to yell to the body, "Shame on you!"

Four Republicans defected from the rest of their party to support the measure: Senators Collins (ME), Kirk (IL), McCain (AZ), and sponsor Toomey (PA). Five Democrats defected to oppose it: Senators Baucus (MT), Begich (AK), Heitkamp (ND), Pryor (AR), and Reed (RI).

According to reporters in the room, the woman who yelled, "Shame on you!" was Patricia Maisch. Maisch was one of the three bystanders who tackled Jared Loughner after he shot Rep. Gabby Giffords in January 2011.

The National Rifle Association, having lobbied hard against the bipartisan deal, was quick to announce its approval of Wednesday's vote. "Today, the misguided Manchin-Toomey-Schumer proposal failed in the U.S. Senate," the gun lobby wrote in a statement. "We are grateful for the hard work and leadership of those Senators who chose to pursue meaningful solutions to our nation's most pressing problems."
