(AP) ? The mayor of Mississippi's capital city says counselors and clergy are meeting with police officers grieving a prominent detective who was shot and killed while he interrogated a murder suspect.

Jackson Mayor Harvey Johnson Jr. called on citizens Friday to support the family of slain Detective Eric Smith. He was killed Thursday while questioning 23-year-old Jeremy Powell. Officials say he wrestled the gun from Smith in a third-floor interrogation room, shot the detective and then killed himself.

Members of Smith's family at his home in suburban Clinton declined to talk to reporters. City spokesman Chris Mims says no funeral arrangements have been set for Smith.

Autopsies are being performed on both men Friday, though it could be several days before results are released.
